I often go to Star Bucks or the park next to it and play STO. I use a VPN for anywhere internet not home, but know I cant play else where because I cant play STO with a VPN anymore. This just started a few days ago. Its going to make it so I cant play as much as I want to, And makes me wounder why they want to start collecting data on us now, and if they sell that data do we get a cut?
define not being able to play with a VPN. what does it do or so on?
"Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment, because it will never come again." - Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek Generations

Why are you even playing STO with a VPN!? This is a game, NOT a browser.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

It makes sense. If you are on public network like a free Star Bucks wireless or a hotel you use a VPN to stay secure. It is a good idea to take extra measures for security when away from your home network.

True, didn't quite click. But the OP needs to elaborate more. It could be Starbucks blocking VPN, not Cryptic. But this is conspiracy theory territory, as in the many years I've been playing, I've never had any concern about third parties contacting me because that option is turned off apart from Arc emails.

Regardless of if you are playing a game or a browser its pretty easy to hack into a computer as a person just by sitting at a starbucks. Hackers invented a thing called a "pineapple" which would grant access to all computers connected to a network extremely easily. So to protect yourself from hackers a VPN is great.
Though the OP is trying to avoid Cryptic, or PWE whoever from gaining access to his pc's files and searching for private information or information he doesn't want to share.
a guy had his CO account TRIBBLE after playing at a public place with unprotected wi-fi and used to spew very nasty homophobic (and pro-na.zi stuff as well, as i recall) rants all over, until that account got banned...and to this day, that guy hasn't been able to get it UN-banned despite providing evidence showing it was TRIBBLE
and that was just a game account...imagine if it had been the guy's bank account or something similar
so yes, having protection in place when you use public internet is CRITICALLY important if you give any TRIBBLE at all about your data, even if it's just a game account
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.
In the chaos of their battle, I bring order.
I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.
Well i use Windscribe for VPN Access, when i'm in another city, so far so good, but sometimes, the network administrator changes stuff, so i have to use other encription protocol for connection. I dont think is Cryptic, but the network you are in.

Sounds like something is up with your VPN Provider, Cryptic is certainly not doing anything to prevent VPN access.
