Out of the 6 starting "factions" (for my lack of a better term), all but TOS tactical characters get a custom crew befitting of said faction.
FED beam in current FED security escorts in the Oddy uniforms
KDF beam in KDF security escorts
ROM beam in ROM security escorts
JEM beam in JEM security escorts
DSC beam in DSC security escorts
TOS beam in the same 25th century security escorts that normal FEDs beam in.
Is this working as intended? Should TOS security escort beam in TOS era security escorts?
it should be... in fact ALL Fed toons should be beaming in current time security. Dont see why Disc Feds can still beam in 23rd C Discovery Security.
And that would be fine too, but right now it seems like something is functioning incorrectly. If one solution was decided for one, it seems to me that it should be applied to the other.
Also, I'll point out that TOS characters also get TOS beaming effects, communicators, tricorders, scanning effects, warp effects and a UI. They also have access to a fleet of T6 TOS ships, weapons (space and ground), uniforms, bridge officers, a fleet holding, BOFF abilities and kit modules.
The security escorts is where we draw the line? It seems to me if TOS toons get all of that, by default, they were probably supposed to get the security escorts.

Agreed. And it seems like ToS toons are just left behind in the dust... >.> I want more TOS Ships!
The Discovery characters make the argument that TOS characters are now in the future completely moot and from this point on forward this is a glaring oversight.
Security Escort, Photonic Fleet, Fleet Support and Medics (DOFF that beams down a medic on the use of hyposprays) should all be era appropriate.

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me at all if that was something the devs want to do at some point, but it would surprise if that was a priority in any way.
They decided not to make security escorts for TOSlings, then decided differently for Disco, for no particular reason. So what else is new? Cryptic has long history of making style choices like this. Just look at all the outfit restrictions that have all the consistency of dice rolls. Or which ships get custom bridges.
But personally, I couldn't care less what pre-made stock minions my security escort summons. If they aren't customizable, they aren't mine.

That's also a good point. Being able to customize Fleet Support and Redshirts at least visually would be a huge deal. In the next step they are even allowed to be geared out with some equipment, like a Diablo 2 merc. Imagine your Fleet Support summons one of your drydock vessels.

Story-wise, in-universe, your TOS character is the only one. You needed to die in battle for the greater good of the Federation, but it was a single specific captain in one ship. Discovery... there was a lot more than one person, also it wasn't Daniels that displaced you in time. It was J'ula, and she displaced not just you but all of Starbase 1 and the fleet protecting it.

I know that, but in-universe it makes no sense the people continue using antiquated technology and further, this is not about in-universe logic. When I choose a TOS character I get the TOS loading screens, emotes and uniform options. Why are the escorts and space support exempt from it, when it isn't the case for any other group? Pretending it is to preserve in-universe consistency is nonsense, and anyone who claims it knows that full and well.

Actually she displaced you, Her own ship and her escorts, SB1 remained and was later taken over by klingons and there's no indication that Shran or the other captain whose name I can't recall atm got displaced.

Actual he says he saved you and some members of your crew Cough couch your TOS bridge officers
Anyway Cryptic needs to add TOS redshirts for AoY characters to die like they were born to do
Edit: also side note yeah WHY are Discovery characters tapping combadges ? was I in section 31?

Either an oversight or they didn't have time to fully impliment something. I think the Discovery communicator has a slightly different chirp than the TOS one.
By all rights Discovery Captains should share the communicator animations with TOS Captains. But for some reason we got the combadge tap.
because the Disco Captains are Section 31
Your pain runs deep.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.

Better yet, they should just give us multiple versions of each, one for each era, with shared cooldowns so that we can pick exactly which era we want to use. For me at least my "Discovery" character is actually a TOS character because I made it before true Discovery characters were a thing, and I can't justify purchasing the various lock box and lobi items I'm using a second time just so that the character can have era appropriate abilities.

I feel that would be utopic. The visuals are sonehow tied to the faction, having that match up would be a good first step.

More practically, they should all just be 25th century, because it's a bit silly that they'd still be using the old ones. Finding out that my DSC Captain I made solely for the warp and and scan animations has DSC security escorts has completely killed my enthusiasm for the character.

It wouldn't be utopic, it would be Cryptic finally catching up to something that has been common practice in dozens of other MMO's for years: Selling cosmetic animation/equipment/ability changes.
Between the clunky user-unfriendly C-Store, the hoop jumping and delays in buying Zen, and their opting out of extremely easy and popular everywhere else cosmetic options, I sometimes think Cryptic is actively trying to not make money.

That'd be a point, but I somehow think that STO doesn't work that way. But only the devs would know that.

The devs once tried selling ship skins in the Z-store.... Apparently they were so unprofitable that they got re-purposed as things you can get from fleet stores.

You're told by Daniels to pretend to be a 2409 Fed if you make a Discovery character as well, yet they beam down Discovery escorts.
