OS support - unable to launch game on 2008r2 (Windows 7 server)

With the latest update all versions of windows server seem to be blocked from running the game. I had been running on 2008r2 which is just the Server version of windows 7. People have tested with newer versions as well with the same result. This makes no sense when even vista is still supported.

Can confirm this happens on Server 2016 as well. Opened a support ticket a couple of hours ago, will report back if they bother to answer it.

Well, PWI support got back to me:

" Thank you for contacting us and I apologize for the issue. Unfortunately, we no longer support Windows Server. This was a decision made by the dev team, and therefore I am not able to provide troubleshooting steps for this issue."

So, apparently it's "Windows 10 or GTFO"

    Hello,
our currently supported OS's are listed on the main star trek page. https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online
    They are :
    Windows® Vista, 7, 8 or 10

I apologize. Windows Vista (no longer supported by Microsoft), 7 (already out of mainstream support, 1 year before end of all support), 8, or 10. Those who wish to play on the superior and much more secure Server 2016 - which boasts the exact same graphical and DirectX capabilities as Windows 10 and all graphics drivers required, are kindly asked to leave the game. Never mind that exactly zero of these supported OS's are available on GPU-enabled cloud platforms. Forget that each of them has severe issues on virtual platforms. Disregard that the OS of choice for technical professionals is Server - including those who wish to play on hardware supplied by employers, hosted in virtual machines, or hosted in the cloud. You are not wanted, and Cryptic doesn't want your money.

To date, I have not gotten any explanation as to what capabilities are missing in Server 2016. Microsoft themselves is so convinced that it is in every way as capable as 10 that they do not even have a licensing model for 10 in cloud GPU-enabled desktops. There's no need to do so, as 2016 already has licensing models for VDI and cloud desktops and does everything that 10 could hope to do.

Please, Chrian, tell us why the developers have made this decision. Give us a reason why Server is not supported when it can effectively (and quite exceptionally) run games with an astounding range of engines, graphics levels, and system requirements. End of support for Windows XP was an incredibly good idea. This allowed you to move beyond Dx9 and vastly improve the game. Give us the same rationale for force-blocking an OS used by people who play your game and is more than capable of playing your game. Help us here.

Why would you run the game on a server OS?
  • miketalonnycmiketalonnyc Member Posts: 12 Arc User
There are a few reasons. In my case it's because I'm using a cloud gaming rig. Cloud GPU-enabled VM's are almost always Server since it offers exactly the same graphics drivers, performance, and features as Win10, but has an established cloud licensing model.

For others, it could just be that they work in IT and use Server as their base OS because they're more used to it; or for the extra features and flexibility it provides, etc.
