Did terrorists force Ireland to rejoin the UK?

The episode the high ground depicts the “reunification of Ireland”. Most would assume at first the Northern Ireland left the UK but as Northern Ireland doesn’t want to leave the UK and there are still unionists today in the Republic there’s a (smal) chance it could be the opposite.

Let’s look at the evidence:

1. The Union Jack still has St. Patrick’s Saltire representing Ireland after 2024.

2. The United Kingdom is still called United Kingdom and did not return to the Kingdom of Great Britain suggesting the union between GB and Ireland still exists.

3. O’Brien and Bashir spend many hours in the holodeck bonding over a potential shared British/Irish heritage such as the famous Battle of Britain.

4. In real life, Ireland will be one of the countries to suffer the worst after the inevitable collapse of the euro and will have to turn to the UK for financial help.

Remembering a minority wanting to rejoin the UK only makes it more likely they would turn to armed rebellion as they would never win a vote.

It's one of those things where the episode was written around 2 decades ago IRL and what the writers guessed would happen isn't the way things actually went.

Ireland was a neutral during World War II. So there is no 'shared heritage' in the Battle of Britain as you've suggested. Were there Irish in the UK's armed forces? Without a doubt there were. As individuals. Not official representatives of Ireland. Ireland's neutrality during WWII gave the Axis a front bench view of some of the things the Allies would have preferred to keep secret. And the Royal Navy's loss of bases along Ireland's western coast did not help with either protecting convoys or prosecuting Uboats.

Lastly, the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force guaranteed Ireland's neutrality remained inviolate. Wasn't it convenient they were all based just across the hall as it were?

If there is one constant in this universe, it is Hollywood can't be bothered to either read history or get it right.

OP, you are getting into political territory here. Just saying

From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Maybe Ireland became unified as part of the UK in the fight against the EU?
