I have one of each. I joined STO when LoR came out, and my first character (still my Main) is a KDF-allied Romulan. I added KDF and Fed characters, to explore their storylines, but when it came time to create another Romulan for Delta Recruit purposes, he allied with the Feds.
For RP purposes, I liked the KDF alliance better (as I'm basically a TOS guy, and there the Klingons and Romulans were sometimes allied, and ALWAYS against the Feds). In terms of STO, I think of my KDF-Rom main as an RSE Star Navy remnant, (loyal to the Empire, but NOT to the half-breed Pretender Sela). My Fed-Rom is very Pro-RR, though.
Pragmatically, My KDF-Rom gets Contraband and useful Prisoners, while my Fed-Rom has a much larger Admiralty Fleet.
The best part, though, is the Foundry. There are some really lovely Romulan missions, but because of the ally mechanic in STO, some are only for FED-Roms, and some are only for KDF-Roms. I've never written a Foundry mission, but I've played and reviewed a lot, and I feel that there are a number of Foundry missions that are much more Romulan than anything STO has to offer after you ally. Both sides have some great ones, and to play them all, you need a Rom on each side.
Diaula(Fed) takes after Nero rather heavily, but without the murderous vendetta.
Emani(KDF) is a TOS era Romulan who got assimilated and a long time later liberated. While she likes not being part of the Collective... she also likes using Borg tech.
Soheth(Fed) is a weird alien hybrid who works for the Republic.
Zdakek(KDF) is the sort of guy who'd happily be best buds with Obisek.
Let's see. Ships are not an issue if you are going to use ROM ships anyway (KDF also has cloakz).
So yeah, KDF has Contraband, consoles, while FED has MORE ships (ugly and all look the same), MORE costumes (although the KDF ones are better imho), MORE of everything. There are some diplomatic missions (like the one found on Vulcan) you can't do as KDF, also you COULD roleplay better with a FED, as there are NPC's in the FED Zones you could be interested in.
There are very active and good fleets on the KDF side, just join reddit chat and ask for an invite (for both sides).
I do not know this for sure, but i think the queues are starting as mixed anyway? Please somebody confirm this.
In the end, it burns to your liking of the home hub (ESD of Qo'nos it is), and if you can live with never accessing earth as a KDF officer.
My main is an KDF Rom, and i would never wanna change that.
Also, teh new DISCO expansion will be FED only (once again), so you'll having one more FED toon, therefore - GO KDF.
yes, most queues (beside the fleet actions and some minor others) are cross faction.
but in general, i would choose a fed rom, because
there are more ships on fed side => more admirality cards to have fun with
all the shiney things are cheaper on the rom side. Basically a fed-rom is the cheapest to equip atm. all good things are cheap, no need to buy expensive ships for traits or consoles (beside zen but that count for everyone ^^)
My RR characters are Fed because I felt the Federation is more along the lines of what the Republic stands for, on the other hand my JH are KDF because I felt that fit them better.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
