When looking at the top readout for an enemy's shield, depending on their rotation relative to mine it's difficult to visualise the shield facing on the ship infront of me. Rotating the readout at the top makes it easier to see - the one infront of you is always the shield face infront of you - no thought required.
For ships where the shield rings are obscured by the model, e.g. the Borg Cube, this definitely makes it easier.
The carrot on the display that shows the shield you are facing is not realistic to use, as it is similarly difficult to visualise. This means you can see at a glance.
I believe other games do this to make it easier to visualise, and I believe STO would benefit from, at least, having the option for this.
