will have to scare up copy of the trait and test it to confirm this myself. do you have any kind of logs or anything that could go along with this for testing purposes

yeah that trait causes that when shields are offline, i'll give you my resist numbers:
without oblique shielding, with full shields: 49.0% on energy dmg
with oblique shielding, with full shields: 56.7%
with oblique shielding, without shields: 36.0%
lower base resistance will push you in the negatives
here another example with lower base resistance:
without oblique shielding, with full shields: 27.4% on energy dmg
with oblique shielding, with full shields: 42.6%
with oblique shielding, without shields: -1.8%
all specializations and other stuff that gives resist when shields offline have been turned off for this test
