I said game currency because I like the idea someone had above of making it a reputation project... Maybe make it a special project that only becomes available when all reps are at T5 (can use any rep mark) and put it on a 30 day cooldown. This would give incentive to ensure all of your reps are at T5 and when a new one releases to get it to T5 as well. This also means this "free" respec isn't quick but takes some time and grind. Not to mention with a 30 day cooldown if you **** it up you'll have to purchase one from the store to fix it.

I like that idea. It allows them to be earned but not so easily that people just spam them all the time. You gotta work to get your respec but not sell your soul to the C-store any time you fancy trying a new FE weapon to the best effect for example.
Why shouldn't people "spam" them? You can change your specializations, traits, boff skills, etc on a whim, what's so different about the skill tree?

Aside from forced respec from Revamps, I've never had the need to respec.

but they are free, earn dil, trade dil for zen, buy retrain. why are we talking about this?

and on any, loadout, profile or anything else that translates to I want to be master of all/have godmode I'm against, sto is easy and simple enough as is.

And precisely this^^. This game IS so easy as it is, and with the 'Personal Endeavours' giving 'account skill bonuses (such as to Crit hit)', which was briefly posted the other day and then removed, why oh why do people feel the need to respec so much, if at all? Yes maybe reduce the Zen cost, but free.....nah.
Right. In fact after the last revamp, I played for about a year before I even put in any points in the new skilltree at all, because I didn't want to choose something "wrong." Then I looked up on the internet what was good, put it in on all my toons and forgot about it. Since the "balance pass" I considered using a free respec token I still have to redo the tree on my main to match the new meta...but if I'm gonna lose the token forever it's not really free after all. I expect I'll be forever saving those tokens for the next change and never use them, because it's not worth spending. Them the game is too easy.

Respecs in this game are not worth spending money on, real or dilithium. Not even any appreciable amount of EC, really. If they're not free, the skilltree might as well not even exist as far as I'm concerned.

The idea of de facto being maxed out in everything is not appealing to me. Even though the game is easy enough to allow you to finish most content in even a sub-optimal loadout, still, some element of choice should remain.

    Tl;dr: No.

I dont think they should be free, but there should be an alternate pay option, dilithium or credits. Say 20k dilith/500k credits and it scales up each time you do it each month, 5th retrain capping out at x10 the starting amount every retrain after the 5th is same price, at the start of each month it resets to stock starting price. Thats how a lot of games do it, you could chose to save your dilith/credits and use zen, or use dilith/credits to save your zen.

It provides a badly needed credit/dilithum sink, gives new people a way to fix build without being only PAY NOW option that may scare them off. Ive never paid zen for a retrain, and never will, I personally dont like tieing money into something that changes with the meta so very often.

The way it is doesnt effect me much, I do a generalized build for almost all my characters so I dont need to alter it often/ever in most cases, plus i have 12 toons so no need to try to run all ship types/builds on 1 guy. But there are a lot of people who do want to swap, and often, but wont pay zen. This would be a compromise that would benefit both sides.

The game doesn't need ANOTHER dil sink, even if this would be a more irregular one.

Another valid point there too. I can blitz level a toon and spec it right on the first try everytime....yes, being very modest, but....even on my worst toon, it can still cruise up and have a picnic on a Tac cube, then begone before it breaches my hull. As I mentioned earlier, people need to breathe between mouse clicks. Heck, I even spent 5 minutes when the new iteration hit, reading what each point did, so I would not make such elementary errors in the first place........and people wonder why I get annoyed when they haven't paid attention at Ju-jitsu or worse yet.....not reading the instructions that were right before their eyes  People must remember, that this is an RPG, and character building takes time, and some care. The fact there is a Zen cost, you would think, should actually scare them into actually doing that, but yet they claim 'punishment' because they can't live with the consequences of their actions, despite their being an option to undo it. Just slow down guys....it is for your benefit.
