I would much more prefer that if Salvage would have an equal system as the Replicators do.
In fact I would like if there was a setting in the replicator that allowed me to choose if the items I put in to the replicator should become Energy Credits or Salvage.
I also don't understand why we can not turn reputation gear in to salvage. I can't see any logical reason why they should be treated any different. The protect this item ON/OFF is enough. If it's all about them being more valuable then other items, which they are not.
