If anyone cares, Blizzard has released the old 1998 classic StarCraft and the Brood War expansion for free. Version 1.18 provides better stability in modern operating systems. It also includes windowed mode support. Blizzard is releasing StarCraft Remastered later this year.

A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch."
"We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
I actually just reinstalled D2 over the weekend, works great on my win 10 PC, just have to run as an administrator.
When it comes to Brood War, I'd much rather see them port it into SC2's engine than just slap new sprites on it like what they're doing. I loved Brood War back in the day, and SC2 is far from perfect, but the there are several key things that I personally think SC2 did far, far better.
and i also just reinstalled D2/LoD myself after noticing they released a series of patches last year that makes the game work on modern systems

Yeah but thats SP only, I'd love to do some Brood War 1v1 or even 4v4 using the SC2 engine.

From what I remember those missions technically aren't mods in the usual sense, but rather just custom missions using ported Brood War sounds. To do MP someone would have to recreate the BW units and tech tree in a custom MP map.

Anyways... I'd honestly like to see them rerelease WarCraft and WarCraft 2. WC2 was my game back in the day.
I wasn't crazy about WarCraft 2, both races played a bit too similarly for me. WarCraft 3 was better in that regard, but I didn't like that multiplayer was focused entirely on leveling your heroes in that one.
https://us.battle.net/account/management/ just go there, log in, then click the giant green Add a Game Key button on the right-hand side - assuming you actually HAVE a battle.net account...if not, you'll need to make one first

Actually... I'm pretty sure its just the fact that its OLD software that still has options for Sound Blaster cards. These are actually physical discs I got. My guess is that its just not optimized for modern systems as it is using stuff from the mid 90s.
And yes I do have a B.Net account.

Only reason Blizzard ever had CD keys originally was to register games on Battle.net. They didn't even use them for DRM: they actively encouraged making copies of StarCraft CDs for LAN parties (good times). The patch before this even disabled the CD check.

Not just that, Diablo allowed for making "Spawn" copies for LAN parties, and I don't use the word Spawn randomly. It was literally labled Spawn.
It wasn't until Diablo II and StarCraft that they started with the copy protection stuff.
Does anyone else remember when you had to copy the game manual due to the game asking a question about the 14th word on the 23rd page as their form of DRM?
i have, however, seen games (like might and magic games, which is why 6-8 are awesome; dunno if 1-5 or 9 also had that, because i never played them) with riddles and passwords where you had to actually type out the answer instead of being provided with a few choices, which you could just brute-force your way through...that's something modern games with riddles need to start doing again

I have. The disk versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter had something like that where you had to match symbols that were on a certain page, and type in the code. It was always three Aurebesh symbols, and some word or phrase under it. So for example you'd have three symbols on page 13 of the TIE Fighter manual, and you'd have to type in the counter, which could be the phrase Emperor's Will.
Battle Bugs was similar, where you had to input the correct symbols from a given page.
