Boffs will only use secondary fire

I thought this was going on so I did a test. I gave my BOFFs my Advanced Herald Antiproton Beam and then watched during combat. Not once, never, ever, did a BOFF use the primary fire mode of the weapon. I specifically used the Herald weapon because the chaining antiproton beam is impossible to miss when it goes off. I gave it to all four of my BOFFs one at a time and NONE of them ever used primary fire.

I suspected this had been happening but, especially in the midst of a ground furball, actually seeing the difference between primary/secondary fire modes of the other weapons I equipped my BOFFs with was next to impossible.

Is this a problem with BOFFs in general ? Only a problem with certain BOFFs ? Only a problem with specific weapons on specific BOFFs ?

I have become quite used to the fact that my BOFFs rate of fire is a lot slower than mine, no matter what weapon I give them, but for them to only use secondary fire mode ?
