What happens when you fire a weapon on DS9?

As far as roleplaying and cannon is concerned:

So I take it an alarm goes off, and the station area you are in is sectioned off by a forcefield when firing a phaser... found this old thread on Reddit,

but can anyone please fill me in on more details or a reference?

Also does this only apply to phasers or all energy weapons?

That's a problem i have with ST 6 The Undiscovered Country, you fire a phaser at a pot of mashed potatoes and an alarm goes off and a security detail comes in ten seconds (not to mention ONLY the pot gets vaporized and not the contents wtf?). But every single series and movie after that have no such Starfleet procedure or rule about firing "unauthorized" weapons aboard ship, first and last time you see this reaction is on ST 6.

But on DS9 is another story, since its a Barjoran space station and not Starfleet. Bajoran security will just throw you in a "holding cell" (not brig), because weapons are not allowed on the promanade.
