Nobody has forcibly obliged you to either install Arc or play this game. If you havn't figured out yet, we used to boot up this game with an executable back before Arc was a thing. What is your problem? Remove the scamware out of your computer and enjoy headache-free experience.

My 'thing' is that I just can't get passed how they can fubar their own tool like that, and not even test things. Drives me bonkers. Arc is their main overlay for all their games, for crying out-loud. But, their loss: it's gone.

I agree, it's incredibly stupid to design it that way.
I don't use Arc, but knowing about this massive design flaw just helps further ensure that I never will.

You won't regret it. I only ever had ARC installed for a total of about 5 minutes, long enough to login to all my characters at the time, unlock the Kahn costume, log back out, and uninstall it

Yeah. I had it installed once, because buying Zen thru STEAM proved unreliable. And, at that time, they had removed the Charge button from the website. But I see it's back again.
I load Arc, run my arc missions for the free Zen, close arc completely, then load the direct STO launcher... Having to type my password is a VERY small sacrifice...

I only keep ARC for promo codes these days. Run STO through Steam.
Well, when I first saw this thread, this is not what I expected.
With all the new content (including yet another space battleground) and Geko saying "PvP is a top priority" in a recent podcast... I figured this thread would be pretty much anything but this.
Psst, Dstahl had already been dangling that 'PvP is going to get our attention' carrot in front of us, long, long before Geko was ever here.
Geko and DStahl are contemporaries, both being on the dev team at Cryptic for STO from the get go.

Cryptic/PWE is if you want to claim things like the Khan outfit initially. You have to have ARC installed to do initial claims for prizes like that. That being said normally you don't have to use Arc.
The funny thing about Cryptic/PWE games is you can do the following:
* Launch the game itself and use a direct login screen to get in.
* Use a games launcher to login to the game and load up the game itself. (2 launchers)
* Use ARC to log in and hit the game launcher to click play to get to the game itself. (3 launchers)
YO! We at Cryptic/PWE hear you like launchers! So we put a launcher in the launcher in the launcher and called it Arc!
Oh yeah, found that overlay...so that's why STO has been so much slower nowadays with Arc than directly started. Maybe the overlay doesn't like the now-required dx11 or something. I really wish I could turn it off.
I didn't have any problems with the hotkeys, though. Mine is set to shift-tab and it didn't come up with anything else.

Only time I had any issues running ARC was when it first launched. Have had zero problems with it and use it all teh time to launch my games. I don't know what this shift nonsense is I just have the arc Icon in my tray and one click I'm in and then just select the game I wish to play and then click play. Bing bang boom easy as pie. I have run it on 4 different systems to date no drama.
Seriously, starting up the game, and now, WTF?!, they bound the SHIFT key to the Arc overlay. No, not just SHIFT-S, but SHIFT altogether! I can't even sprint this way! Heck, I can't even type *I* this way. What brainiac thought of this brilliant idea!?!
Either that, or my Arc is broken.
EDIT: And I seem to be always running too, without the option to revert that.
P.S. Fixed the topic.
Sorry, but I know you've played the game long enough to know you can use the .exe to launch it without Arc or Steam.
I only have Arc because I wanted the Khan set, and then I saw the missions thing for free Zen. Pretty much I open it, do the free Zen missions, then play through Steam.

I personally use ARC mainly for the daily quests for free zen.

No, it's glitchy. And I dumped it. After half an hour trying to undo the SHIFT nonsense, I just had enough.

So very much this!!!
We come in peace, SHOOT TO KILL!
I set everything I need a password for to make me type it in every time on PC.
I realize it's the smartphone generation, but it's more secure that way.
but the internet is such a safe place, why would you need security?? /sarcasm

They meme'd us in a convoluted launcher way.

When the overlay pops up? go into its options and turn off everything then click it off , you should be good to go from there on out.
