Could have sold a quarter of those and bought a nice T6 ship on the exchange. Half would have gotten you one of the most sought after ships in game.
Glad you are sorting the game!
Could you specify which ships in your opinion are the most sought after in game; I would really like to know?
Voth Bulwark, Jem'Hadar bug ships, TOS T6 Constitution, TOS D-7(T6 version), off the top of my head. The ones that run 800 mil on upwards to 2 billion EC.
Could have sold a quarter of those and bought a nice T6 ship on the exchange. Half would have gotten you one of the most sought after ships in game.

While I have zero data to back this up, my gut says the single most sought after ship is the T6 Constitution. This is based purely on anecdotal evidence, that it appears to be a legitimately very effective ship, and that prices for it are usually so high that you'll never, ever see it in the exchange.
It has a combination of being incredibly rare/difficult to acquire, being the most iconic vessel of the franchise, and a beast in game. You really can't top that.
Just behind it is it's sister Temporal vessels, the T6 T'Liss and D7. Gotta say, that Bird of Prey is definitely at the top of my wishlist of stuff that actually currently in the game.
And with THAT many keys? You could easily have traded for at least one of those three ships, maybe two of em' even.
I've opened ~30. I didn't realize how valuable the keys were when I got my 30 from the LoR pack and burned them on some Infinity lock boxes. I did get one ship token, however, though I haven't spent it. It's just the Secondary Ship token, which will let me either get a Mirror Universe Romulan ship, a Kazon Raider, a Nihydron Destroyer (leaning towards this one and sending it to my fed for that admiralty card), and I think one or two other whatever vessels.
Well lets see. I have the Sphere Builder lobi equipment (600), the Temporal Warfare lobi equipment (600), The Council Defense Pact lobi equipment (600), a Paradox (900), a Vengeance (900), and one Iconian blast-staff thing (50). Plus another ~480 lobi stored up as I work my way towards the Silent Enemy equipment.
So about 4130 lobi over my account lifetime. Probably 140 of that is from opening promo! boxes (10 each + two ultimate prize ships). So the remaining 3990 came from keys. My key-to-lobi average has always been high, closer to six than five, so probably about ~670 keys used to open boxes. In that time I've gotten all three Kelvin Timeline ships (grand prize) and maybe nine T5 consolation prize ships.
I've also bought both Tal Shiar Adapted ships and the Narcine carrier at pre-Infinite box prices by selling keys for Ec.
Several thousands, probably. But only once to get a Lobi ship (Wells); the rest I either just converted to Dilithium for Upgrades, or used to get EC to buy ships and what not.

Thanks. Shaking my head over the likelihood that I will EVER feel up to even attempting or accumulating the equivalent of 800 million to 2 billion simoleons for a ship. I had considered appealing to the kindness of strangers since it is the holiday season, because there is bound to be someone sitting on one that they just don't need, but now that I see these figures ....
Doubt that an appeal such as that would succeed. I do appreciate the info all!!

Not going to lie: I had fantasy scenarios in my head where someone found out how much I've loved the Romulan Bird of Prey since I was in friggin' kindergarten and said "You know what mate? I have a spare. Merry Christmas." Or, like, the gods of Cryptic would smile upon me and I'd open just a handful of boxes and get one. Obviously I'm not going to go around begging for one, but frak me do I really want one.
But it's cool. This is the second time in a few months these boxes have become available, so I'd be shocked if they just vanished forever after this. Now that I know the T6 T'Liss is a thing that actually exists in this game I can start trying to (very slowly) start saving up. I'm a very, very long ways away from how much money/keys/zen/ec I'll need to straight up buy one, but unlike you I honestly very much would like to do that.
At least I got my Voth Bulwark from the Phoenix Prizes! My Saurian captain couldn't be happier.

Saving up EC for the ship you really want actually ends up making that ship way more enjoyable to use once you get it. You can smugly (and rightfully) tell yourself you got such an awesome and sought-after ship by sheer force of will and patience. Even using just a little bit of RL money to get you to that point can make it just about as expensive (or even cheaper) than a C-store ship.
Before I learned my lesson: Around 150, and I only won some T5 consolation prize ships. Plus the lobi of course.
I've sold more keys than that for EC, and bought several lock box and lobi ships off the exchange including the Vaadwaur and Xindi-Insectoid escorts, the Herald ships, and just this week the Jem'Hadar carrier to go with my Pheonix Pack T5 attack ship.
Opening boxes is a losing game unless you need the lobi or can open thousands so averages work in your favor. Selling keys for EC is the way to get the ships you want. That's also true for traits and most weapons. A weapon box on the exchange usually costs much less than a lock box key.
I don't even want to think about how many keys I've used over the years. Started after FtP.
I was able to pull out a Temporal Science Ship, 2 Jem HEC, and an 2 Adapted Destroyers. No T6 ship though, this was back in pre-T6 days.
I still occasionally open boxes, and until the infinity boxes started, are used to open the Tal Shair boxes just to sell Plasmonic Leeches.
I just don't think it's really worth it anymore, better off selling keys, contrabands, Promo R&D boxes and getting the thing you want off the exchange, unless you need Lobi specifically.
Thanks for the Advanced Light Cruiser, Allied Escort Bundles, Jem-Hadar Light Battlecruiser, and Mek'leth

Part of opening lock boxes should be an actual understanding of the rewards - if all you ever want is the ship, then for pity's sake: sell keys, buy ship.
I open lock boxes because I want the ships, I want the weapons, I want the traits, I want the specialized Doff packs, heck I can even tolerate the dilithium vouchers. Most of my captains have exotic gene-sequencers to optimize their playstyle and play experience. Frankly I think having/not having the Helmsman trait is more important than which ship you fly, 'cause that trait is awesome. Most of the possible rewards are of use to me in some fashion, and I definitely want the lobi. Not for lobi ships (which again, are better acquired off the exchange) but for the lobi gear which is account bound and available no other way.
You'd think that, but math says you'd be wrong. Humans frequently assume "average" results are "always" results and that it's always 'someone else' that gets to eat the sub-par results. Worse, most people believe that they are out and out "lucky", and that fortune is required to smile on them. Today you are the 'someone else'.
At less than 500 attempts at a 1:200 result you're not even close to being into weird or even 'unlucky' country yet.
The odds on at least older lockboxes were 1:250 not even 1:200. Before you open 500 lock boxes, the odds of getting at least 1 ship are 1 - 0.996^500 = 86.5%. There is a 13.5% chance of getting NO ship, so 1 in 7.4 people are expected to open 500 keys and get none.
As always those are the odds before opening any boxes. Probability has no memory so the 486 opened boxes mean nothing, you are starting over with 1:250 odds.

Yep. I've always opened the boxes expecting the common rewards, not the rare ones. Which is good, since over the years I've opened enough boxes to get a few lobi ships (Hazari, DSD, Adapted BC, Voth fighter, ?), some costumes, and a few other small things (and have ~1k lobi in the bank), and I only got one 'rare' lockbox ship (a Herald Quas).
Only between 10 - 15 keys, include the 3 bound key you get from the First Time Buyer reward.
Nothing in the Lobi Store has really caught my attention. Most keys I have purchased were put on the Exchange. However, at the moment I believe I am sitting on a reserve of 70 - 80 keys just in case I change my mind about things in the Lobi Store.
Could have sold a quarter of those and bought a nice T6 ship on the exchange. Half would have gotten you one of the most sought after ships in game.

I see this advice/suggestion/etc. all the time. It nearly always seems to have the undertone of "God, how stupid do you have to be? Just sell the fracking keys and buy the ship. Blasted newbs gotta ruin everything!"
Thing is: This suggestion is actually very BAD advice. If everyone sold keys and nobody used them... then they wouldn't sell. You can't buy a lockbox ship off the exchange if nobody opens the boxes to get the ships.

Umm.... the people selling ships in bulk on the exchange buy keys from the exchange. It's the cycle of life!
Opening boxes does work IF:
- You are prepared to open thousands of them so the average of 1 ship per 250 applies to you.
- You are willing to do the work of selling thousands of boxes of non-ship stuff on the exchange.
As long as those kind souls keep doing that work for me, selling keys for EC to buy ships will continue to work perfectly.
That applies to none of the people starting whine threads though -- they open a measly 100 - 500 boxes and give up. They were foolish to not sell keys for EC and leave the box-opening to the professionals.
At least 1200 (I opened a few before I started keeping track) so far. I don't open them for the ships, but rather for the "box of chocolates" effect, wondering what will be inside. Even so, I've gotten 24 Mirror Universe non-upgradeable T5's) and 6 T5U ships, for an aggregate yield of about 2.5%. Lots of mining claims, DOff & weapons packs, and lots of various boosts. Once the Admiralty system started, even the MU ships have some value. Which reminds me, I've got a couple hundred new keys waiting in my account bank, after snapping up some more key rings in the last sale...
