[PC] 2016 Q Winterland modules: opinions?

questeriusquesterius Member Posts: 8,708 Arc User
What do you folks think of this year's QWW cryo modules?

http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/10281003-winter-event-2016-rewards

To be honest I'm a bit underwhelmed.

The engineering module - Freeze armor - looks like a cryo version of Weapon malfunction but turns out as a "Cold flash fusion"Lite.
Not convinced if this is worth the inventory space.

The tactical module - Micro Cryonic Warhead - is a cryo grenade with a different animation.

The science module - Cryonic Pulse - is a cryo version of sonic pulse with the freeze effect. I can see some use for this module on science characters who like to go melee.

What are your opinions?
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Well, that's kinda their point to be cryo versions of existing modules.
That said, compared to other modules (usually from lockboxes), they are, like their vanilla counterparts, underwhelming except during specific situations where brute force isn't the best or is the longest solution.

E.g. when facing elachi, tholians or heralds?
Anyway, what does everyone else think?

I will give them a try on Defera. Though I must say that Science Kit Module from the Kelvin Lockbox - Cold Fusion Flash - is devastating to the Borg. Just remember to Remodulate BEFORE firing it off.

off topic but i just wish kit modules were consistant/ EMP takes out heralds but not borg? WTF? Solar gate kills everything except tholians, who melt at the exothermic field?

Solar gate is like baking in blissful heat for the tholians. :pensive:
Personally i think it's a good thing that not everything is super effective against everything. Strengths and weaknesses that sort of stuff.

Freeze Armor does not interest me at all.

Micro Cryonic Warhead... maybe a melee weapon with an explosive punch? Might test it out.

Cryonic Pulse sounds like sonic pulse with the ability to freeze? Maybe worth checking out especially if there is a Boff manual.

Event Modules options for ENGs are never as nice as the are for SCIs and TACs. IMHO

Cryo mines are great for engineers.

I have the cryo pulse to a sci boff and it works pretty good. I think it is better than regular for the slow, especially vs bug hunt or jemhaddar or Klingons. Regular pulse they just charge you again, this is better control.

The cryo missile is a fun variant for boffs but I only see using the kit version on a cold-themed character. It works fine but it isn't awe inspiring.

I hope sometime they mix those up so there's a bit of variation in the classes.

exo field deals fire damage, which doesn't heal tholians; solar gate deals radiation damage, which DOES heal tholians

The Micro Cryo Warhead isn't a grenade. Its a Cryo version of the Micro Photon Torpedo Launcher. There's a separate Cryo Grenade kit module.

    My Wish List:

Science - " Cryogenic Preservation " module, that works like vascular regeneration, but the animation is like the frosting up animation, and it provides healing over time.

Engineer - Cryo-Turret/ Mortar either fires a Mortar round that either freezes, or a cryo beam like a phaser beam turret.

Tactical - Breen Escort - Beams down a escort of Breen Security officers, separate cool down from security escort.

Not too sure about the science module there, but i like the ideas for engineer and tactical.

I like that in addition to the Kit Modules, they included BOFF Training Manuals for the same powers. I wish they had also offered manuals for the previous years' Kit Modules. Hopefully, this trend continues.

I agree, that is a nice addition. Would be nice if training manuals for the previous year modules were added as well.
Maybe not now, but next year?

Rattler has it correct. It's the cryo version of the micro photon torpedo. And like the other micro torpedo kit modules, it can be used for more than brute force "Hey diddle diddle, everyone up the middle!" tactic that so many knuckle-dragging players use.

Use it for additional crowd control to lock down a target or a group. Interrupt a channeling activation. Just like the other micro torpedo kit modules, you can use it while in stealth, and it won't break stealth. It benefits from all those nice tactical buffs along with Adrenal Rush trait. Sneak up to someone, pop your buffs, then alpha someone if you build as a burst assassin.

And with the cryo warhead training manuals, it's hilarious to see a bunch of tactical boffs all hit the giggle button on a target or group in quick order.

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to make a build that uses the micro cryo, micro photon, and micro chroniton torpedoes all at the same time. Although I understand why. :(

Only other kit module I picked up was the cryo modulation. I love using it to no end, and the visual effect is nice as well. So far, my first winter event has pleased me greatly(although I've got just a small amount of hope and resources left that I can land the Rezreth Dreadnought for my main to finish his cold-dwelling race theme within the final 24 hours).

Freeze Armor is more like Fuse Armor. Instead of electrical damage, it's the cryo/rads damage. Gotta get it for one of my engineers at the least.

Micro Cryonic Warhead. Not a grenade at all. Arm cannon/torpedo is more appropriate. Quicker release, with no waiting or hoping the herd of cats stays put. Seeks the targets out. Works in stealth, without breaking stealth. Nice graphic when fired and travelling.

Haven't tried the Cryonic pulse yet. Not yet ready to play as a space mage.

Think outside the box on how you can use each. I'm loving what I've gotten so far, as I have an affinity to the cold themes.

Going to buy them for my Eng/Tac/and Sci feds.
I always do even if they're a little underwhelming.

Also bought 2 sets of the boff version of Micro Warhead. Gave em to my two main Tac boffs.
Will I ever use them. Probably not much.

Chances are I'll just tuck them away in my bank, and forget about them. It's nice to have "just in case". And I'm not exactly hurting for inventory space just yet. So.. Why not.

I've got thousands of ornaments. And not much else to spend them on.
