The application I would have for it is enabling Supercharged Weapons and/or Weapon System Synergy on a ship already stacking antiproton bonuses. Its an antiproton weapon that counts for torpedo traits .
It's a very viable torpedo... and it's really good with Torpedo Spread. However, it has a 12 second cooldown so that is something to keep mind if you intend to fire as many torpedos as possible.
It's a red ball of energy that's boosted by everything that does +allEnergy and +projectile, and has no drawbacks except for flight speed and reload time (IF you do not use PWO's with them). You can fire it at someone who has FBP up and not worry about being hit, despite it being energy based.... Yea, @borticuscryptic this is still a thing

I defer to your expertise on torps, of course, but it's not boosted by +projectile consoles, right? (Although it *is* affected by projectile traits such as Load Viral Warhead).

That's correct, it's treated as an AP DE weapon rather than a torp in all respects as far as damage boosts go.
Not a huge torpedo specialist here, but I heard it sucks tremendously. You'd be better off with the old good Neutronic, really. Cat1 damage boost is nothing.

It's viable but it isn't near the top of the torpedo charts.
Not arguing with you, but what would you consider the top five on the torpedo chart? Me, I like the Neutronic and Gravimetric from reputations, and the crafted PEP. All this assumes a Science ship application, with massive EPG to boost the plasma cloud, and generally high Sci skills.
Perhaps, rather than posting a reply here, you might be so kind as to start a thread on "Top Torpedoes" in the "Builds, Powers, and Game Mechanics" forum, under the Feedback section? There already exists a torpedo boat builds thread there, but the discussion of torpedoes specifically has applications for all builds, not just torpedo boat specialty builds.
Understand, I'm not challenging you. I'm just interested in learning more.
"Directed Energy", shorthand for the family including all beams/omni-beams and cannons/turrets. Peer terms would be "Exotic" (all non-weapon damage), and "Projectile" (Torpedoes and Mines).
So far there have been three of the six directed energy damage types made available as torpedoes: Antiproton (Phoenix Box), Disruptor (Mission Reward), and Plasma (Lobi store). Presumably we'll see Phaser, Polaron and Tetryon at some point, as those are easy iterations on existing items. Personally I'm hoping for a Tetryon Torpedo related to the Vorgon ships that aren't available to us yet.
It is very nice with a full AP beam weapon load for ships that don't have many tact slots, so you can use torp spread on it and have the rest tact skills for beam fire at will.
I must warn you, I am quite Isane! I am Grand Duchess of the Abh Empire: Beneej Letopanyu Spoor!

Neutronic is top. In no particular order after that, I like the Gravimetric, Particle Emissions, Romulan Hyper Plasma (for shuttles), the Counter Command Torp (whatever it's called), the Quantum Phase torpedo and the Krenim Torpedo. Honestly, the Neutronic is so good, that it's pointless using anything else about 90% of the time. I'd even prefer to use another AP beam instead of the AP torp and I always use a torpedo for "fun" and "Star Trek realism."
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
Quick related question! Im theorizing a build for my new bug ship i got. How about 2 antiproton DHC, 1 wide arc DHC, and the antiproton torp (already have one upgraded to VR XIV) in fore with 2 omnibeam antiprotons and the kinetic cutting beam in aft? Really dont want to put DBB on a zippy little escort like the bug ship having 20 turn rate, but i hear people knock cannons nowadays.

If you have an AP build and at epic levels it is a very good torp. Just like the new Nauscian torp that is boosted by disruptor weapons consoles. It is very close to neutronic with the right build.
Is there any reason why when this Torpedo goes from Rare to Epic it does not get ANY modifiers at ALL?

It's boosted by AP energy Tact consoles, yes. And [Amp]. And EPtW. And weapon batteries, etc. And I love it!

I knew using Kinetics would be playing the game on hard mode, but what I didn't realize was how bad the deck is stacked against Kinetics.

What does the "DE" mean, please?
