Why don't they remove items when they become obsolete? Is there something I"m missing?

Strange alien artifacts - Can we do anything with them?I realize they were made obsolete with the change to the crafting system.

But, it seems like there ought to be something we can do with them.

Frankly, a bigger question is why they don't remove items (like the weapons plans) when they become obsolete. Seems like a lot of clutter. Or, is it so much effort that it's not worth the bother.

Kinda like the ORIGINAL Kits for chars? I had a bunch in inventory on my toons, as certain ones (Bunker Builder Engineering Kit) sold for a nice bank every now and then. Literally, sold one for 15 million in September.....now they are all worth nothing. (well 15,000 EC if I take them to the right vendor)

OR commodities in general....lol....all those people that were playing the exchange buying and selling those for Fleet Projects, now....worthless? It is what it is man. T5 ships used to be king, now they aren't. Such is the ways of MMORPGs. Never ending grind.

Yeah those artifacts are completely useless now days.
Wish they had a trade in option for them.

1 R&D pack or 1 Elite R&D Reward box or 1 Duty officer pack per Alien artifact would be a nice compromise I think.

I don't think they are technically obsolete, I think you can still turn the artifacts into random consoles using your on-ship science and engineering project doff assignments. Much like using the console experimentation doff assignment but with two steps and having to visit your bridge.

Really? I may try it just for laughs to see what happens - though if the Doff assignment is anything like the nebula colonization ones or the other chains which require searching across the known galaxy for them, I'm out.

You can still make the normal consoles but most are undesirable and are worthless on the exchange, except for Phaser and Antiproton TAC Consoles (very rare). Even then, you're not going to get rich off of them. Universal Consoles, Fleet Holding Consoles (i.e. Spire, Lab, Embassy) effectively killed regular consoles.

I think there's at least one DOFF assignment chain that still requires the Alien Artifacts.

You would think that Cryptic would give you the option to turn the old kits into the Kit Mods, or at least let you pick One Kit Mod from the old kit

Well... you could always hang onto one and whip it out in zone chat every once in a while like a trophy.

Wait, there is a ZONE chat? I have access to: Fleet, Local, ESD Politics, DSP RP, and ESD Religion. When did they add Zone Chat????

When exactly an item like a kit or a console becomes obsolete?

If you remove them the very day the superseding item becomes available, it may lead to... unpleasantness. And after a year or so, it would be so far on the back burner that the back burner would be the new front burner, and rightly so. There are far more important areas in the game in need of improvement than occasional obsolete item clogging the inventory.

But speaking of antique useless stuff... Was surprised to learn that old-style crafting schematics still drop in The Vault...

Why go to all the trouble of making a console with Alien Artifacts (which may not even give you a very rare), when you can click 2 or 3 buttons and craft the same consoles with guaranteed very rare results ?

They make no sense in this day and age.

I'd take a salvage tech per Alien Artifact if they ever offered a trade in option.
Or if they could be used in place of a Very Rare R&D component in a crafting recipe that'd do nicely as well.

Right now I have about 30 of them. And they'll probably never be used.

Because you have some and there's nothing else you could do with them. Unless...I suppose some collector might pay a few EC to get one off the ex.

Well, keeping them is definitely useless.

I still craft the alien consoles, mainly for the CXP points, but also to provide super cheap consoles to new players in the game.
