Please tone down specular lighting!

To quote myself from an abandoned thread:

The new 'glow,' from my experience building stuff in Second Life, is specular mapping (reflective surfaces, based on normal/bump maps). And they waaaaaaaay overdid it. Like the transporter shaft, or the floor/walls towards to where the Fleet bank is. They really need to tone it down significantly.

Seriously, it's awful. The entire fleet base is shrouded in a kind of blue mist, where you see lightsources in every surface. And the Dilithium mine has gone full-blown purple.

In Second Life, when they first introduced specular lighting, builders severely overdid it too, just because it was there. But it really ought to be applied rather subtely; and then it's gorgeous. But in STO they totally went overboard with it. It's even on your boffs, for crying out-loud!

So, yeah, please, can it be toned down significantly!?

The new rendering touchups really did end up looking great, but yes it needs much more polishing. Some parts are way too bright, and I don't enjoy 'mist' of any sort that results in a hazy appearance unless it is something temporary or a result of something localized in the environment and limited to certain areas. This is a science fiction game, not fantasy for which there's no mmo shortage.

Turning "Lighting 2.0" off helps for the moment, at least until Cryptic decides to "tone it down".

That was actually a very good tip! :) Not sure yet how much it disables (like I still want to see like those Elachi energ bolts glisten off my hull, or watch C-beams glitter in the dark, near the Tannhauser Gate); but so far, at least, everything looks pretty much back to normal again! :) Thanks!

Also try to lower your bloom intensity when/if using lighting 2.0

^^^ that; i use 20% bloom intensity, and have been for years - it helped with the massive, frame-destroying white glow blobs in empire defense and exploration cluster areas back in the day
Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

I just turned bloom to 'low' (instead of 'high'), but I saw no visible difference.

No, turning down bloom helps to alleviate some problems, but not the one OP is describing. The described overlighting present on some (mostly ground) maps is innate problem with Lighting 2.0 and sadly, the only way (afaik) to fix it is to turn 2.0 off altogether.
Yes, it can cause few other things seem "less pretty" and one room in K-13 looks completely white, but other than that, I have decided that for me, 1.0 is better and i need yet to wait for improvements to 2.0 before using it.

Think of it as a camera lens filter. They put it over everything, but without the skill to fine tune it. Helps with a lot of details, but... this game wasn't really designed for it...

As mentioned above, and by @tacofangs on his thread, you would have to turn off the 2.0 system to fix the some issues.

I agree; this is why I don't use the lighting 2.0. some stuff are nice, but this new lighting still needs a lot of work. i use the old lighting, and even with it, I have disabled all the glowing, shiny stuff + the post-processing option, this one is also very ugly.
