True black on Sphere Dreadnought?

fruitvendor12fruitvendor12 Member Posts: 615 Arc User
For some reason the deepest shade of black on the sphere dreadnought is more of a soft gray. I'm running on a new high end machine with all graphics at max. Virgo and Sagittarius should be showing the color off at full benefit. Is it just me? I named it Magic 8 Ball and want to get as close to a light-eating black as possible.

Thing is, other than the Risian ships, there aren't any starships that have full hull coverage for patterns. So you wouldn't be able to go full black anyway?

Did you try setting both colors to black? Sometimes if you don't, you'll get a color lighter than black.

    Yes. Obviously. ;)

I thought I'd ask. A truly-black Sphere Builder ship might not be possible.

Have you dropped Reman shields into the visual slot?

I was always under the Impression that the only really black materials in the game (on ships) were default on the Dreadnought-class as well as the Scimitar and the pilot-raptors. Also, optional on Avenger-/Arbiter-class.

For hull-colouring, the risian ships can also be 'painted' black through their hull-patterns.

    Is that one 'true' black?

You get some green gloss, but it's pretty damn dark :). Certainly the darkest of the cosmetic hull materials.

All of the intel ships have dark options, but that's not a lot of help for a Sphere Builder ship :).

(Though pretty much everything looks better in Tholian Metals for my taste.)

'dark' is not true black. True black would be for example, the optional black hull-material for the Avenger-class.

true black isn't possible in STO, because the engine renders 0,0,0 as invisible

The Arbiter Fleet Hull is the only ship I have seen that really looks truly black to me. Even the Dreadnought material on the Vengeance isn't as dark as the Arbiter Hull.

Honestly, I can't think of another ship that can pull off that dark of a black. Not sure why that is.

The Fleet-Arbiter should unlock the Fleet-T6-Material for itself.

The black one you refer to came standard as an optional with the Avenger-class (T5) already. Does it not come standard with the T6 Arbiter?

I think the other problem is why the Reman covariant shields, while practically mirrors, has rather obtrusive sections of green. To make your ship standout. Matte black against the dark of space would give your ship an advantage of natural stealth at distance. In PvP that could allow you to fly around to the opposing player's flank. Yes, I know engines leave trails to prevent sneaking, but if noone's looking for you then there's a possibility they might gloss over your engine trails. Especially if they're in a furball.

GUI targeting reticles render any possible attempt at stealth in PvP (which no one plays anyway because cryptic killed it 2 years ago) utterly useless

Well I'd like it with patterns. :) I take it that is a positioning, or a photoshop? But yeah I'd like a black that is as deep as possible.

    I didn't realize 0,0,0 is treated as transparent. Is 1,1,1 better? ;)

Same. I've seen black on other hulls. It's just weird that the darkest black on the palette for the Sphere Dreadnought is a soft slate gray like what we see on a Weimaraner. :) (beautiful dogs, handsome, dumber than a bag of mud)
