Counter for Pen?

mattjohnsonvamattjohnsonva Member Posts: 4,974 Arc User
With all the Pen in the game now, DOFFs that stack slicing through shields and resists, is there any way to counter the Pen effect directly, for example the Shielded Data Core will give resists against physical damage. Pen, it seems slices through any armour and with BOs available on GCD this means even a 70% resist tank cannot last for long, even with massive heals and nearly 200% OOC hull regen. I hear there are some regen consoles available from the new holding, perhaps these may help? I've scratched my head over this for the last few hours and other than a good FBP I can't see how to resist this kind of attack, unless of course you can kill them first.

What am I missing?

You're not missing much, all you can do is stack some resistance and pray.
It's not an issue in PvE (unless you consider super high DPS a problem) but in terms of PvP, its not a healthy thing.

Datacore was a good start for phys cheese in PvP (although people can stack resistance debuffs on you like crazy and bring you down to -20% hull resist) it becomes a TRIBBLE show, and not much is going to help.

They could probably cook up a few more consoles of the Datacores ilk to help with this issue, like [Pen] resist console. Resist Hull resistance debuffs console. etc.
If they put a little effort into it, it might actually make the PvP environment a more rewarding experience.

In my PvP Vesta T5U, which is a tank/healer/FBP/Kinetic FBP build, I have little trouble defending single attackers. Even the heaviest of hitters. So I dunno, I seem to do okay defensively despite the crazy [Pen] and resistance debuffs. I can even survive for quite a while when outnumbered and ganked.
But then again, it's probably FBP and kinetic FBP that gets me out of trouble for the most part. So maybe hull resistances are just a nice buffer and secondary in any success I've had..

Yeah more or less what I thought. When we're PvPing in the fleet it's usually sparring rounds for fun and training, 1v1s are the most popular. We tend not to use FBP as it's so massively OP when buffed with EPG and resist doffs etc, we also don't use the A2SIF doff as it's so bloody annoying or the Zahl trait. It seems though that if up against this double tap BO [PEN^max] that FBP may be the only cure, although continuity always gives them another bite of the cherry.

Defo agree about console counters, we need to be able to withstand some of the **** that's being dished out now. My Entropy build is lethal to most players, even those with an epic datacore struggle as that's all they have. They keep introducing all these new powers, which I love for PvE, but Borticus always said there would be counters for every type of attack, there may be, but they are either stupidly OP like FBP with it's easy 2+ reflect (my Annorax is at 550 EPG and up to 7 reflect lol) or sadly nowhere close to actually countering the incoming attack.

Let's see what the new consoles are like from K-13, but I'm not that hopeful.

x7 reflect ! (*low whistle*) wow, you must be a Tactical Officer. That's pretty impressive.
My Sci would drool over that number
I think I can get it pumped up to like x3-4 max (which is more then enough considering how deadly it is), depending what abilities I use to buff up. But at rest (no buffs) I think it sits at like x2 - x2.4

Druk had a nice idea about a trait that would ignore immunities. I think that might help as well for offensive builds that get frustrated by all the immunities.. But, immunities and Zhal trait are a whole 'nother can of worms.
They would be wise to be cautious with any changes to immunities, as in many cases, they are all that stand between your ships destruction and the crazy [Pen] and Hull res debuff :dizzy: And FBP for that matter.
Sometimes immunities are the only thing that can save a player in danger.
If they go too far in either direction, it could be disastrous.
Not like PvP isn't a bit of a disaster already (at least for newer players, I feel bad for them, because PvP can be fun, if you know how to build for it).

I mean, like you said they just keep releasing stuff, and in a lot of cases (especially recently) its great for PvE but not great for PvP.

They need a counter to FBP. That is the thing that ruins pvp, when you can't even fire on your enemy without destroying yourself. Your only hope is if you're fighting in a group and someone else triggers it first. :(

They need a counter to FBP

    - Subnucleonic Beam - Removes buffs
    - Torpedoes - FBP only effective against energy weapons.
    - Offensive space magic - See above.
    - Shields that have the resistance to the same type of energy damage your weapon causes.
    - Time - Wait for FBP to wear off.
