I've seen similar puzzles to this in other games. And honestly its a breath of fresh air. While STO is set in a time of conflict, the occasional break in the pew pew is more than welcome. I honestly felt like a Starfleet Officer when playing the new mission on a Fed character.
As for the puzzle in question... all you really need to do is pay attention to the order you need to set the pillars. The rest is click button until mural segment matches. Simple. AND the order of pillars is not the same with each playthrough, so there is a bit of a random element.
You want more frustrating puzzles, you should see some from the Knights of the Old Republic games. Those take some thinking. I remember one particular Math puzzle from KoTOR 2 that was particularly interesting and actually had to ask for help with.
then there was that stab-the-dev-TRIBBLE-who-put-this-torture-in-here colored ring puzzle in one of the korriban tombs in kotor...and to top it all off, it's REQUIRED to solve to advance the story
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"

I say give us MORE puzzles. With more variety and complexity. And have more difficult ones applied if you set your difficulty to advanced or elite. Put the current baby puzzles on normal.
Not everyone enjoys puzzles you know. Some puzzles i don't mind and others really annoy me.
A nice middle road would be to have the option to skip puzzles when replaying the mission (so not on the first run).
Actually my suggestion is a middle road. Give the weaklings their easy puzzles on normal mode. Skipping them is ok as long as they pay something for it. 1,000 Dil sounds nice to me.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
Hate to say it OP, but if the pre-school level puzzles in STO are giving you that much difficulty, you have larger issues than playing a video game....
It terrifies me to think people who regard STO puzzles as mentally taxing might be driving on the same roads as me... I mean lanes and signals and speed limits... ALL AT THE SAME TIME!! ermagerd!!
then there was that stab-the-dev-****-who-put-this-torture-in-here colored ring puzzle in one of the korriban tombs in kotor...and to top it all off, it's REQUIRED to solve to advance the story
I'd rather do that 20 times than the forced PvP to get a companion in swtor... which they eventually made optional... But originally you HAD to do it or you forfeit any future quests/companions from that contact
Star Trek embodies exploration (lacking in STO I know and you only need to watch zone to see how many people CBA to 'explore' every button on screen) and solving mysteries more than it ever did in blowing things up.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
This exactly. Most of the puzzles I would've been able to solve when I was 6, they really are that easy. God help the OP if we had choices that were 'Diplomatically' influencing the game environment.

This generation? I happen to have just past my 51st birthday. And yes, there are parts of my brain that don't work right. Medically documented, thank you very much. Numbers and puzzles happen to fall into the affected areas. If you're going to make fun of me for that, then YOU are a reason for losing faith in humanity, not me.
The puzzles in STO are easy but annoying and time wasting (they are designed to waste time and flesh out the content.) I believe this is what the OP was getting at.
There is a brown spot on my wall from my TRIBBLE shooting off and hitting it i am laughing so hard at this thread and the "puzzles dont belong in video games" crowd. Isnt that the thing that drives the more intellectual games? Problems to solve?
Dont know what to say. Go back to your mortal kombats and street fighters where you punch two buttons to hit and kick someone? A brainless activity? I dont know about you but i like to get wrinkles in my brain from working it. Not to get a smooth brain and someone to cut my food and tie my shoes.
And yet a whole lot of people confronted me when I mentioned how annoying the flashing mail and doff buttons were. IMO people that need the buttons to flash and not just light up shouldn't be driving or using sharp utensils.
I have no trouble with the puzzles in STO just annoying and time-wasting, but they don't drive me nuts like the stupid flashing buttons.

in which case, the muscle-bound tactical officer should be doing it...of course, if you happen to be the tac, sci or eng when you come across a task like that, you're still screwed because you have to do it

Meh... my characters tend to be more hands on. They don't just command, they LEAD.

Then watch TV or listen to music.
Seriously, how selfish are you that just because YOU don't like to use even the 1% of your brain required to solve STO's childishly easy puzzles, that you feel they should be removed from the game?
I can't even believe this thread exists.. if it's a joke then well done, you got me. If it's serious then on behalf of gamers all over the world.. please stop playing Video Games. These puzzles are laughable to 2nd graders.
Everybody is sitting here accussing me of being entitled. Never once did I say your game or your experience should be changed. I only suggest that people like me should have the OPTION to skip puzzles then EVERYBODY can play how they want. But since you all just assume I want to take something away from you, that's your immediate snap judgement, who is actually selfish and entitled?
Oh noes! Somebody wants fun for everybody, how dare anyone suggest something that takes NOTHING away from me!

Just for the record, you can find the solution to any of the puzzles in STO on the Wiki. If you google the name of the mission, you should find the walk through page and that usually tells you the solution to any puzzles.
Maybe next time that will help, it's not an option to skip the puzzle, but it's pretty close since it solves it for you.

I want to run around in the universe that I love and blow **** up. I absolutely DETEST being FORCED to solve puzzles in order to complete missions. I also DETEST that I can't seem to skip that damn mission and move on to something else. If I wanted puzzles I'd play some damn phone game.
Welcome to Star Trek.
Seriously, if you want mindless Pew, Pew, Pew, I suggest you try The Old Republic, Star Trek has always been more cerebral than physical, and the puzzles (as easy as they are) are Cryptic's way of keeping the intellectual 'spirit' of Star Trek in STO.
If you really must turn off your 'think melon' then this is some good advice:
This puzzle is pretty easy to brute force solve. just try things at random, and remember what works.
If that's too much, just do a few Crystalline/ISA PvE missions, nothing but 'pew, pew, pew' in those missions.
I'd like for you to rephrase the quip about ToR being nothing but pew-pew-pew. I play ToR, Warframe, DCUO, STO, and many others including WoW.
ToR has some puzzles on how to complete certain missions that require timing AND thinking all while getting attacked by mobs AND a boss.
Warframe has not only door locks, but there are parts you need to complete while remaining undetected while shooting mobs, avoiding lasers and other hazards while hacking.
STO's puzzles are more math/science related while NOT being shot at.
They ALL have some puzzle or another that requires some thinking on a basic level beyond pew-pew-pew. The OP is just throwing something out there to complain about because he can't just shoot everything in sight and move on.
If the OP wants to pew-pew-pew without puzzles, maybe he should stick with PvP. PvP is nothing but broken mess of pew-pew-pew.
Alright knock it off already. If this were a football game there would be dozens of yellow flags on the ground for piling on.
Do yourself a favor OP, never admit on the Forums that you wish something wasn't so or that you don't want to do something in this game because they will pile on mercilessly and belittle you to no end. Mos Eisley has nothing on some of the Posters on these Forums.

Because someone has to push the button. Or in this case physically move pillar components.

I wonder how kids would react if they told to play Zork...[/quote]
I loved zork. Had to cheat to find my way through the coal mine, but solved all the rest.
I was so pissed after getting like 80% of the way through the game, my brother told me you could just type "w" instead of "go west".
