Wow, never expected so many a reaction on a suggested ship for the KDF... O_O
How about a Romulan KR-11 Shadow Kestrel, a Sci based futuristic looking battleship?
Klingons don't get drunk.
They just get less sober.
I think the thing people are railing against is that we still haven't touched on all the ships that have appeared in the various series and movies to warrant completely custom ships yet. Though, there's also the issue of rights. Whoever designed the two ships in this thread pretty much nixed any chance of them appearing in the game as I doubt Perfect World will bother to try and license their use in the game if it means paying someone not on the payroll to do so. Sure, they could use the designs anyway but then they'd be opening the doors for lawsuits demanding royalties. It's a convoluted, inelegant process.
Well, the OFFICIAL ships seem more or less a no-go, where then to look?
If only Cryptic had in-house designers whose creations are automatically Cryptic property without having to get 6 times as many lawyers involved as the number of artists required to conceive, build and deliver the damn ship in-game.
THAT is where to look. Given that I love the Eclipse, the TSA Destroyer, the Klingon Intel battle cruiser, most of the Romulan Command Warbirds, etc. I'm pretty happy looking for more from there.

That's a race boat painted as romulan... not romulan at all... the KDF ship... looks more romulan than this one..

In order to use fan designs, or even soft canon like the Vesta, there's a long legal process to acquire the rights to use the design. Its also the reason why Cryptic can't use popular designs from other games like the Fek'ilhr and Shrike classes from Star Trek Armada. They do NOT own the designs. The last official fan design I believe was the Odyssey. Although I think some of the other contest entries were brought in as other classes. But the minute they were submitted in the contest, Cryptic had the rights to use those designs anyways.
Soft Canon ships like the Vesta are the property of the people who designed them. Same with the Fraz Joseph TOS ships like the Saladin and Federation. Not only would you have to negotiate with CBS, but you'd have to negotiate with the person who owns those designs. Long process, and usually also means paying the owners of the designs for the rights to use those designs.
As for canon designs, We've pretty much hit rock bottem on canon Romulan and Klingon designs. Only Klingon ship left really is the K'vort, but the problem with that is she's supposed to be a cruiser, but looks like an upsized B'rel Raider. Logistically its confusing for players on if you're facing a Raider or a Cruiser, and development wise its going to be lazy because there's almost 0 development time. All you have to do is upsize a B'rel and lock the wings in a single position. And then... you might just end up making a bug between the K'vort and B'rel.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

I got to admit I do like the design of that D-70, and could see how it would be an evolution of the pilot and intel ship designs, and would welcome a variant look of it. Though as stated I doubt it will happen, unless we get another submission based design contest, but both are quite out of the realm of possibility of happening. i mean we had the jupiter design contest that could have gone that route, but did not for various reason I am sure.
I mean I would love to see them use the design of the enterprise F shown below, whether done as a new Enterprise or a new ship class, but I doubt this will come to be as well.

If needed I can contact the "creators" and ask them if Cryptic would be allowed to use these.
Usually, I have very good reactions when it comes to such things.
Not going to ask them, if I am unsure whether Cryptic would use this, or not.

But they do not, seems.
And thus, where to look then?
IMHO, it's not bad to contact a freelance creator, usually, they are VERY generous, at least in my experience.

From what I understood, from the maker, was that this would be a more futuristic boat, maybe end 24C?
Not sure though...

I understand.
The ships I suggested here could be revamped in any a way, so they become unique of build, based on the "original" design.
Maybe, we should go back to fan-based creations, problem is: 99% of all ships will probably be Federation, while they have (in comparison to the 2 other factions) FAR too many a ship....
Still, the fan-base could be surprisingly good in design and ideas.

Yes, the issue I somewhat touched above: make a fan-based creative forum topic, in which they could place a few ideas.
Fans usually know what the things (could be anything, from toilet paper to full blown mods) should look like, and I suspect, this is especially true in STO.
At least for the majority.
If you look at for instance Skyrim, what mods there are...
Some are truly astonishing...

The Chimera Heavy Destroyer (1000 day veteran reward) came from the "Design the Enterprise" contest as well. The problem with the contest came from people submitting entries that weren't their own.

Right?
And it DOES look somewhat official, even if it's entirely not...
Aren't looks everything? XD

That could've easily been the KDF's temporal ship.
