If not non-human...

Would it be any easier to have NPC species that are only less human looking, still two arms and legs, but otherwise different in basic outline? They could be from outside our galaxy, or an alternate universe where the Preserver seeding didn't go as planned.

Or just have them relegated to doff system?

Humanoid aliens are easy since they use the same skeleton and animations. More unique alien races like have 4 joints each in their two arms and legs would require an new skeleton and animations. The Xindi aliens have already been relegated to the doff system since some of them are not humanoid.

If I recall correctly, the Undine (Species 8427) was problematic from an animation standpoint, due to their three legs, but they managed to make it happen. Nevertheless, i doubt we'll see any more species that are that complex again. It would be nice though.

So, nothing like an Eosapien, the Ice-block Thing, Men in Black, or Green Lantern background aliens?

Nope. It's easy to sketch those compared to the difficulty of making a wireframe model, then animating it. The weird background aliens usually just stand there and look funny.

Considering the preservers seeded our galaxy with their own dna having non humaniod like aliens is very rare.

Cryptic did introduce the Horta and Exocomps so aliens that only move by floating or gliding across the room would be easy to do. So we could see the Medusans in STO since apparently we can only see them in a box or go mad.

What about the Melkot, and the Excalbians?

When it comes to that, Somtaawkhar, I've made a few posts and tweets about an event where the milky way has a passerby in the form of a ship that enters a star at a shallow angle, and comes out unharmed, which cause's the Player to join a fleet of their faction to follow and board it.

The away team gets re-directed to a room, the size of which they can't tell, where they are scanned before being released to continue wandering around and find the crew is non-human, somewhere inbetween The Q and the Lactrans(TAS) in intelligence, from a galaxy further than Andromeda, and therefore not a product of the Preservers.

The inhabitants would be moving(simply walking is optional)around, paying little or no attention at all to the Player. That or they are in stasis the whole time, since that seems easier. All to show we are still one little piece on the board.

I wouldn't be too sure of that, they had nothing for the Iconian ships, or the Na'kuhl and Vorgons. And the barrier part depends on if they would even bother, maybe they have a super version of metaphasic shield or portal like the Iconians.

That is actually brilliant. The lens flare in the new Star Trek movies are actually energy-based aliens.

All that said, if a sentient species is too much, than animals instead, like on internet art sites and not some dog with a horn?

Update: could some species yet to be added have NPC robots alongside them?
