investigating temporal probes

This question was probably addressed in depth before. I'm doing Diplomatic Orders and looking for a temporal probe. Other than that the mission is over. I'm not sure how to find this probe. Is anybody else experiencing 23c tricorders not seeming to work like 24c ones? Existing alts tricorders shine a beam in an anomaly direction. 23c tricorders just seem to make circles but don't seem to show direction. It does say there are so many anomalies in the area but that is not helpful in finding them. Anyway, I don't think temporal probes are scanned. Why isn't there a hot bar button or such that would put it on the map or at least point you in the right direction. Sorry just frustrated. This seems to be a clunky system to me particularly for 31c agents.

the guide tells where to look but not how to look. How do you search for the probe and put it on your map? Do they glow, flash or make noise? I don't know what I'm looking for or how to find it. I'm sure its simple once you know but this is really something that should be in a tutorial.

You can not scan for them.
When a certain distance, they will be on the map as a white dot.

They are considered NPC's as opposed to whatever they call items that come up on a V-scan. Also, woe be unto you when you do Operation Gamma. That is the single hardest probe you'll ever find.

The probe doesn't show up on the map until it has been "identified", ie, one of your BoFFs tells you there is a probe detected. I have found that on a lot of the maps, especially ground maps, that sometimes doesn't happen until you are practically standing on top of it.

Put this in a keybind, or do like I do, type it in, then highlight and copy. That way you can paste it into the chat bar quickly.

    /target temporal probe

As long as you get within @ 85 meters of the probe it will pick it up. This is especially helpful in Operation Gamma. I have now twice found the probe actually buried under the surface of an asteroid with nothing but a faint red glow on the asteroid surface to mark it's location. A glow that could only be seen if you were in just the right spot and @ 10 meters away.

It would help if the probes made a sound. Guess that would be too easy and not enough fun huh?

lol, yeh. Even worse are the probes that don't appear until after you have completed certain actions, and then they appear in an area you have already left, and have NO reason to go back to........unless you are hunting for a temporal probe and happen to know that it might appear somewhere you have already been, but only after you left (Temporal Ambassador)
