A new console is at least 4 years away, but it's unlikely they will abandon XB1 and PS4 at that time.

Not only that, but if Microsoft's Plan comes to fruition with Scorpio and Beyond, STO will be playable on all future iterations of Xbox.

Right up until Xbox becomes a service on Windows, bringing STO full circle, back on PC.

    Sony will likely follow suit.

To give an example of why it should not be a big worry -- 6 years ago DC Universe Online launched for PC and the PS3. When the PS4 came out they added the PS4.

They still support the handful of people that play the game on their old PS3s today.

As others have stated, the next-gen consoles are about 4 years away, and if STO handles it like other companies have even then the older consoles will not be immediately phased out.

Consoles are now laptop PCs in disguise, so the PS5 and X2 will just be newer PCs -- they can probably run PS4 / X1 games with zero changes needed.

PS4 and X1 lacked backwards compatibility because the PS3 and X360 were NOT PCs, they used IBM PowerPC processors instead of x86. The X1 BC uses an emulator and per-game fixups.

It's a risk you take with the console version.

Yes, it's a small one since as others said, the next generation of consoles are likely years away and should still support the game. Still, the chance is there that STO won't transfer to the next generation of console, it's just a question of rather you think the risk is worth it. I know that both Microsoft and Sony are focusing on people being able to take games with them from platform to platform since that was a big complaint of the last gen. People had games for their XBox 360 and PS3 consoles that they could no longer play on the new consoles.

I personally think the risk is small, but it's a risk none the less. For all we know though, STO won't even be around in 3-4 years.
    Insert witty signature line here.

The current console market has changed. Instead of brand new consoles every so many years that are completely different and need new games, Sony and Microsoft have decided to go with a smartphone model, with incremental updates every so often with faster machines, but all the old software works

(And then Nintendo seems to be going with a hybrid console/handheld, instead of separate ones.)

Come to think of it, isn't this a pretty weak DOOOM! thread?

In four years you might lose access to your console stuffs? A proper DOOM! thread should be spreading fear about the game shutting down next week for lack of players, or because the zika virus has made the developer brains really tiny.
