Brand New Computer - Game Doesn't Work

Just got a new Acer Predator with enough juice to power a borg cube. After a month without a computer, I'm ready to get back in the game. I download the launcher, ARC....then it takes three days to download the patch. Finally ready to click engage. It loads the AoY screen and that's it. I tried downloading through Steam and same thing. Load screen comes up but no further.

Anyone have any suggestions or similar experience?

Get rid of Arc and just put a shortcut to the STO executable on your desktop or action bar. Also, that shortcut should be set to 'Run as Administrator.' One of the latest Windows 10 patches I loaded killed Arc for me. I now use the executable to launch it directly and it works fine. Anyway, give it a whirl and good luck. Q'apla!

No idea. But I can say that I've not had any trouble running ARC on Windows 10 with the latest updates. My PC is older though.

I still have the old shortcut hanging around, and that still works fine too, so I'd second the suggestion to give that a try.

Good luck, hope you figure out your issue.

Download it from CNET from scratch. This easily skips the whole ARC junk, although it is another round of downloading and giant update. Should take an hour or two.

I'm running updated Win10 with Arc and having no issues. You've already passed Arc as well since you are getting to the AoY screen. Arc isn't your issue. I don't have to run in compatibility mode or run as an administrator either.

Do you have up to date drivers for your video card? By up to date, I mean downloaded from Nvidia or ATI and not Windows. What you are describing sounds like a graphics/driver issue as that is the point that the game switches over to it's engine to show the captain selection screen.

Re-downloading it probably won't do you any good.

Arc and Steam are just front end overlay programs, they both download the exact same game, same as using the stand alone. They're 100% identical. If you think you have a bad file then save yourself some time and click 'Options' from the Launcher, click 'Force Verify', then save and log in. That will be MUCH quicker then re-downloading the entire game.

The best suggestion is to log in using Safe Mode. If that succeeds, then once in the menu, set the options the way you want them and re-launch the game. If it's an Acer Predator you can set everything to Max, any Predator made in the last 5 years can run this game on max without even breaking a sweat.

    Give safe mode a try.

Does it stop at the AoY screen? Of so, let it run. It seems for some computers, it takes a long while for the game to load the first time. For me it took 30 mins (ROG GL552VW) or so. After that, the game should load smoothly until the next patch where you'll have to wait at the splash screen.

Someone said (can't remember if it was here or Reddit) that for computers with dual graphics cards (like most laptops) the game recompiles material resources on fresh install and after every patch causing the delay you are experiencing.

Brand new laptop this year to. No problems using Arc or Original Launcher. When the launcher appears, click on Options and click on Safe Mode and also enable Fullscreen. You will have to adjust the graphics options when you get into the game.

I had a similar issue when I first started it up. Was an issue with getting the game to run in full screen. It might also be an issue with DX11 which some graphics cards still have an issue with, so if you still have an issue, enable DX9 in options.

the game sometimes takes a dump when using DX11 for some folks. Myself and a few of the other Bug Hunters encountered this awhile back and were able to formulate a workaround that will let you get into the game long enough to change the graphics settings. Load up the STO launcher and go into Options. Scroll all the way down to the command line. Enter the following code into the command line:

    -d3d11enable 0 -d3d9ex

After you enter that code press save and that will force the game to default to DX9. Once you load into the character selection screen, enter the Options menu. From there under the graphics tab you should see a drop down list that will say something about DirectX 11. Click that menu and from that list select either DirectX9 or DirectX9ex, it won't matter which one. from there hit apply. You may want to restart the game to let it take effect. after this you should be able to enter the game as normal.

Don't bother using Steam. Zen purchases are a hassle and you don't need Steam running whilst playing. Just get the original launcher.exe. Steam and Arc provide NO BENEFIT!

    In your opinion.

I'm not saying I don't respect your opinion, I just personally disagree. For me, it's much easier to buy Zen through Steam Wallet then it is to minimize the game and go to the Arc site and buy that way. Also, Steam still has the $5 Zen option that you can't get any other way. :)

Either way though, the point is moot because if the game doesn't work through Arc, it won't work stand alone or through Steam. Hopefully, safe mode fixes his issue.

Best answer, specially if your video card doesn't support DX11. Having said that, throwing Arc/Steam to the side and placing the game in Program Files would be also an option, but both make changes to the Windows registry that prevent a user from doing so. Can only be pulled off on a fresh Windows copy where it has never been installed and you just copy the game's folder.
