Game Engine

Hello! With all the new technologies out there like Direct X 12 and Vulkan I feel that the game engine for STO is getting dated. I know that the lighting is being updated but has any heard if the engine itself will get an update to support DirectX 12 or the Vulkan API. It just seams to me that now matter how fast of a graphics card or processor you have it will be limited by the game.

Not many games out there take advantage of DX12 in fact very few do because its so new... To be honest changing the engine of the game would be a huge and expensive undertaking and would most likely be more cost effective to make sequel using a more modern engine, you also have to take into account they have 3 games using the same engine and same server hence you can communicate across those games so they would need to update 3 games.

However lets take a look at the current engine which barely uses DX11 so there is lots of room for improvement with the current engine using the tech it supports.

DX12 and Vulkan are designed to make GPUs more efficient, not to make things look better. Pixar did not need Vulkan.

I feel like taco and some other devs have given long, detailed, and solid answers to this topic at least a half-dozen times this year

STO isn't canon, and neither are any of the books.

Buzzword allure. A person reads a snippet on some site about how "vulkan will improve games" and thinks it means it will give us new exploration clusters.

Now a CLOUD-BASED rendering engine would definitely make the specular infections more cromulent.

I have facepalmed so many times in the last few months reading posts from people not understanding the difference between an API and a game engine that my face hurts. DX12/Vulcan just exposes the new features of the hardware so a game engine can make use of it. You can make your game on a DX12 engine and only use DX9 features if you want, and many games do, because it's easier, cheaper, more compatible and can still look great - look at The Witcher 3.
