Another one bites the dust: Battle Group Omega is being removed (confirmation on Reddit)

https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/comments/51gcxu/breaking_news_tts_thespartanuniversalspartan/

Was it because they couldn't turn it around to face the right way? We'll never know.

In any case, I'd like to voice my disappointment that yet another classic element of STO bites the dust. What was wrong with BGO? It's tied into the story and was one of the few social zones with access to everything - and the only space social zone.

At this point Cryptic is known to rather rip out stuff instead of fixing it. I'm worried that we'll see a complete removal of Defera next or the sector space for that matter. After all, we could access all missions vis a nice sterile menu and transwarp there. The sector space just occupies too much memory and besides, new players might get lost...

So after removal of the transwarp portal to omega itself, they're just up and removing omega. WTH?!

    Thx 4 info @angrytarg.

I suppose the map is not really needed anymore. It’s still somewhat sad as I associate good memories with it. :/

No problem, I just noticed that news that are spread via other media often don't find their way into the official forums.

I think this is a fundamental problem. Cryptic does seem to go by "what is needed", removing most of the stuff that were details and possiblities to create a more dense gaming experience. As I said, if we go all utilitarian on the game why not remove sector space - it doesn't serve a purpose...

I can see why they did it for the "new player experience" though, to remove a bit that no longer fits with the rest of the progression. I remember spending time there in 2012, but since I came back in 2014 I've visited it exactly once per alt, when the story made me.

    Story-wise, BGO has no use.

Gameplay-wise, its function is tremendously important. This is one of the 4 cross-faction social zones accessible by F2P players, and the only space social zone in the game. BGO is the perfect place to bank/exchange for players who do not have the best of computers or the best of internet connections, because the map is relatively empty when compared to ground social zones. Which means it is much easier to load up than, say, K-7/Ganalda.

    Bad more Cryptic. Bad move.

Not a big deal really. For social purposes, the beta quadrant is just fine. For services, the dyson spheres are conveniently centrally located in the beta quadrant and DS9 in the alpha quadrant. Plus all of those zones actually have players in them.

It's "tremendously important" for the few players who even remember it exists, much less bother to fly out in the middle of nowhere Beta Quadrant with no transwarp just for some services they could much more easily access on the homeworlds, a fleet holding or a freighter bridge. :*

He raises a good point though. I've been seeing much more lag and slow loading on almost every ground map lately. I'm used by now to running around ESD with walls not being rendered. In that way, a far less resource demanding map can be a godsend.

On the one hand, I don't go there much. But on the other hand, it's another piece of content (old content at that, which I used to visit on the regular back when it was end-game relevant) that is being removed. The wounds from the removal of exploration haven't fully healed, so I do have an emotional response to this change that is very negative.

    Ah well.

I don't have a problem with this to be honest. BGO serves no purpose anymore.

Firstly, they don't DO anything. Guard a particular sector against possible Borg incursions. Incursions that, story-wise, never happened. Or at least not there; we've seen the Borg several times but rather than deploy the task force set up specifically to combat the Borg, Stafleet has a habit of sending five random ships instead.
And where were they during the Iconian war? The Borg threat was hardly at the forefront of anyone's minds during the war - overlooking the fact that the Delta Quadrant were busy kicking Borg butt anyway, if the Borg had shown up the Iconians would have kicked their behinds.

And from the non-ingame viewpoint, they're not really an important part of any story anymore. They've become a random collection of ships that sit around doing absolutely nothing.

    I agree.. never used it..

Are they going to leave the hook somewhere to pick up the sciborg at least? Or is that going away too.

That's been the biggest point of debate since this was put on Tribble. We're not sure yet.

I heard about this the other day from a fleetmate and was kinda bummed. I'm not really sure why it's being removed to be honest. I always thought it was a cool zone.

They could put it in the omega office on DS9...so that would be of some use again.

So I just read on the STO Reddit that Cryptic Spartan says the borg science officer will be made available in another way. No details on where they're moving that to. But there you go.

Huh. I figured they would delete the barely-functioning mess that is the Defera Invasion Zone before they deleted Battle Group Omega. Why delete a functioning social zone? Going after Starbase 39 Sierra next?

And replace them with the great and powerful Excelsior Class!

Face it Nat & Arty, they are the best ship ever and the players love them. dino5-14.gif

    Oh dear.

Eh, as long as they keep that music in the game somewhere I won't mourn it. That track is badass. :)

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

They can't really pull Defera since they built too much of the game around it. As for Omega... What exactly are you going to do there? one or two things? Other thant that one point where it touches on the story arc, it's not really visited by anyone. Add to that that most if not all of the new players have no clue as to how to use it and you end up with a Vet only zone that never gets updated.

Just sad that you'll loose all the things associated with it.

    On the Reddit, Spartan says
TheSpartan@UniversalSpartan: Battle Group Omega is being removed. The Borg Science Bridge Officer Candidate will be obtainable elsewhere.

So the officer will still be obtainable.

I have to share my disappointment in the removal of Battle Group Omega. This is one of the very few places we can visit--in space--and have access to the Bank, Exchange, Mail, and Vendor. It's bad enough that we lost the Sector Space Vendors, but do really need to have Battle Group Omega removed? If Cryptic were to at least put the Sector Vendors back in the game to replace, I could live with that. It is just sad to see another part of the game getting removed to "improve the quality of the game".

Come on... It was about as useful and visited as the Captains Table.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.
