Both is good, however lens flare is more of a modern day "issue" whereas film grain is there for technicolor "authenticity"..both have their drawbacks, but their appropriate eras wouldn't look right without them.

Lens flares are an easy out to hide shoddy work. Even JJ Abrhams admits that was a huge mistake. Film grain in this game? Why? It only made sense adding it with the DS9 Episode Tribbles and Tribulations to blend the new footage and old together.

To look "retro", anything that's supposed to have been "filmed" in that period would, now-a-days, be subject to a process to introduce an "artificial film grain" effect to the images. The TOS episodes are going to be rendered with a "film grain" effect on...

Film Grain was optional in Aliens: Colonial Marines, and I turned that off.
