After a long discussion with game support and with my ISP with the increasing lag problem it was decided that the lag was a direct result of the number of hops required to get to the games servers. So there seemed to be no solution bar creating some more servers in other regions. I believe that there are only servers in America and Europe, im not sure how acurate this is but it makes it a problem for the rest of the world. Especially if console takes off and reduces the band width.
But there is a possible alternative. It seems with some co-operation between ISPs and the STOL we may be able to reduce the hops between regions and the games servers.
My ISP sent me this ....
Please provide this details to crypticstudios.com.
Please be advised that our Network Eng'r checked this issue & they have detected that Cogent and crypticstudios.com does not have direct peering, Cogent is learning the ip range from one of their peering partners.
If wanted to get a shorter routing path/lower latency.crypticstudios.com will need to make some arrangements with Cogent. ie if Cogent/ crypticstudios.com has a peering in the West Coast, crypticstudios.com will need to advertisement the ip address to Cogent from there.
And STOL support replied
Thank you for reaching us again.
Please be informed that as much as we would like to assist you, connections coming from Australia are not within our ability to control. We appreciate the feed back! Please keep in mind that as Customer Service Representatives/GMs, we do not have any influence over game decisions and also in regards to server connectivity. However, we do forward feedback and suggestions quite often to the developers.
I also recommend posting this to our Star Trek Online Feedback forum, as this would be a good topic to discuss with the Moderators and QA. Our Development Team and Community Teams check the forums often as well.
So it seem that with some effort of STOL side we may be able to have a better gaming experiance.
