Ferangi "Give-away" on :TWITTER: ??

Greetings all..

Hope all had a very good holiday season and the new years rings in with great hope, health, and propserity for all of us..

Now, to the root of my elevated blood pressure and ill-tempered attitude, The LATEST give-away.

It is my honest opinion, that a (and/or any) give-away that features an Item to be used in-game, and give-away entry is NOT available to enter in the OFFICIAL forum, or anywhere else by IN GAME means, is an up-front, back-handed method scheme to either bolster matrix levels or "Followers" for these out-of-game, social media sites.

Personally, I do not "Twitter" "Facebook" or other sites to find out what is happening in "Star Trek Online". In the past, "bug" issues have been first released on FaceBook, Twitter, and even RedEdit(sp) web sites, and, that information was provided in the Forums from PLAYERS; not Community Managers, DEV's, or any other "official" spokesperson.

I wish those luck, that go the ONLY way to enter; out of the game for the miniscule possiblity of winning the item. I'll just get mine from the Lobi Store..

tyvm.. Have a nice day.. Have fun, Be nice to each other..

tbh I was hoping they would have done the giveaway on the streaming site where I got the rmc console. I haven't used twitter and really don't see a use for it personally and frankly do not trust those sites. Well its just a whip so it's not the end of the world but I do hope they have some alternatives set up for future giveaways.

when yer in the minority of the population that doesn't use twittard or failbook, you kinda ought to expect to end up excluded from some contests or give-aways. While I do agree that STO's site/forum/game should be the place to get info or participate, this is not the reality we live in, nor has it been.

Social media giveaways are how things are done in this reality. I blame the Iconians, and Sela.

I'm with you OP. I don't use any social media, hell, I don't even have a mobile phone. At least they don't give out anything thats worth a whole lot when they do these things.

Giveaways are done on Twitter because of marketing. People here in the forums already play the game, Cryptic and Perfect World do not have to convince anyone here to play the game, we are already playing it. On Twitter, when you retweet this contest post, you are essentially marketing the game to everyone who follows you. These people might not play the game, can see your retweet, and might be intrigued to try the game. This earns the game another revenue source in a new player, that's why they do these contests on Twitter and not here in their own forums.

Yeah, there's nothing cool enough for anyone to give away, that would make me give my personal info to Twitter, Facebook, some streaming service, send a text to a number on the phone (no thanks, Taco Bell PS4 giveaway.....), etc.

    Just not worth it.

edit: and honestly, I don't care all that much about giveaways like that, either. Oh, well, them's the breaks. But I agree totally about announcing meaningful game news / bug issues / etc, on social media and not on the so-called "official" forums. That's just shoddy customer service.

    Exactly.

You see, marketing in 20156 is all about ignoring the paying customer and give everything for the non-customers, its not just Star Trek Online, you see the same in cable companies were they offer better packages or better prices for people to switch.

I could understand being upset but this is par for the course, just take it as a life lesson of what companies and people should you support, next time someone says you should buy ships on a sale to "support the game" just remember all of these social media and returning player campaigns.

"All about ignoring the paying customer"? Last I checked this one, the last one, and the toy ship game giveaways have all been open to current players, just done through social media instead of in these forums. So: factually incorrect, the best kind of incorrect.

Wait what? How is this excluding paying customers? Where's any stipulation about paying versus non-paying?

Also for frame of reference, out of all the potential communication medias (Forums, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Twitch), Twitch and Reddit get the least "exclusive rewards". We've only done one Reddit giveaway.. ever. Twitch we haven't been doing streams (because scheduling me is now a bit of a nightmare). Forums have our screenshot contests which is the only way to get flat ZEN (Unless you're from EU and won a Wizkids promotion). Facebook has been largely 3rd party promotions such as Wizkids (Twitter did as well). Twitter has been more in-game items such as a T2 ship and these Lobi whips.

But if you're looking at a method to do a giveaway on Twitter, you need to have an impacted entry method. If you do it off of current follower data, then you inevitably send codes to inactive users which then means less active users get to enjoy the rewards. If you do it based off of retweet or likes, it allows people to enter within a literal click-of-a-button. You don't have to enter, but nothing is barring you from entering. If you want to debate the merit of something not being available to people, let me remind you that this is literally a digital distribution that is available on a media platform that is free for you to sign up for.

Just like our forums (Which is powered by VANILLA)

Is this specific giveaway only ON our Official Twitter account? Yes.
Can you go on there? Yes.
Do you want to? That's up to you.

I don't trust Twitter or any of the Social Media. I prefer cuneiform and hieroglyphics on clay tablets to get my information.

We originally were looking to get into the hieroglyphic market, but realized that it might draw away from our parchment and scrolls market.
