How are things in sto?

I have not played since the Romulans were released. Was thinking of upgrading a few of the ships i spent a lot of money. Not thrilled about that but hey they have to make money too. So it worth it coming back?

That's how every MMO always is..

"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."

IF you do not mind the crazy ammounds of grinding you might have to do for reputation, it is still a fun game. even better though, is that it is NOT escort online anymore, BFAW and beam arrays has become hilariously powerful and thus switched places with cannons, thus making Cruisers and science ships A LOT more usable.

Reputation is nothing compared to the horrific pain in the TRIBBLE which was the old pre rep salvage system.

It's fun if you enjoy story episodes and STFs. I understand that PVP is even more broken than before you left.

If it's too salty for you, you can always quit you know. It's a free game after all. :)

The game is free to play, so I say just come back in, and see if you like it. Also, you don't actually have to upgrade your ships or get new ones. That's only for if you want to do super high-end dps. With old regular T5, ships you can still do enough dps to be useful on any team if you know how to play. (I think as long as you can manage 10k dps, you should be fine in advanced queues.) If you want any help, or want to join a fleet, you can send an in-game mail to me @.K.

Support 90 degree arc limitation on BFaW! Save our ships from looking like flying disco balls of dumb!

Thanks for the info guys. I have reinstalled it giving it a go. I greatly appreciate that kjwashington i have jumped in and the fleet i was in kept me around. Do not know if many are still active but we advance very far with our base so we will see. It is very cool to see a good community still thrives here.

Hold tight to the wallet. Not until you get a good grasp of the game's additions and big changes. If you last played around LOR time frame, the game has changed huge. The fundamentals of the game are still mostly the same, i.e. boff skills, general combat, repairs, etc. But certain things like anything related to traits got changed up. Traits especially compared to 2013.

As for the community, it did take a massive hit in very late 2014/early 2015 due to things going on with the game with Delta Rising's release. Lots of people left from that fiasco. That period was a very low time for the game, IMO. Not as bad as Launch Era STO, but still quite bad.

Well there's people here I can say that. Good community? Post one wrong word or an unpopular opinion and see how fast you get flamed to ashes. The problem here is you have to tread lightly, as walking on the eggshell carpet the forum is rather difficult. And in the game itself, when there are queue runs that don't go as planned, your fault or not, there will be flaming there too.

youve missed a lot ... new bridge officer seats in t6 ships, new skill tree in the form of specialty points, tons of new ships, 10 more levels, many new reps and items, new crafting, item rank up capability, quest chains, new stfs, ... and that is the tip of a big iceberg. Come back for a bit and see what you think. I feel mostly the game is better than it was at 50 stagnation, but power creep is worse than ever too. There are good and bad things about all the changes but I like it overall better.

A lot of nice improvements in my opinion.

The new bridge officer skill training system is pretty awesome. Your BOs no longer forget what they know, you train them once and they can use the ability forever. You still have to decide which power is active, but you no longer need to shuffle dozens of bridge officers.
You can craft training manuals yourself (if you qualify), or buy them at the usual Bridge Officer trainer, or get them from the exchange.

The loadout system system gives you an easier time switching ships and experimenting with builds.
You also now have the drydock system - any ships you don't want to actively fly soon but you don't want to lose (like your Miranda or a ship you bought for a lot of dilithium) can go there, freeing up your active ship slots.

Crafting finally creates useful stuff, including viable endgame gear.

If you have a character with a maxed out reputation, you can create sponsorship tokens for your alts. The alts will then double the amount of reputation XP they gain from reputation tasks.

There have been a load of new story missions in the past two years. Seriously. You have a good amount of catching up to do there!

Otherwise... The level cap has increased, which means a new tier of ships and a new tier of gear (Mark XIII and Mark XIV).
Specializations have been introduced, which has two manifestations: For once, from level 50 to 60 and from level 60 onwards you can gain specialization points you can use to earn passive abilities, a small number of active abilities, and traits. It's basically an endgame levelling system.
And second, there are a new type of bridge officer powers based on specializations. You need ships with "hybrid" seats that can slot either one of the traditional BO skills (Engineering, Tactical, Science) or from the new specialization. Some neat new tricks in there.
To get Mark XIII and XIV gear, you need upgrade kits. Using them will likely cost you a lot of EC and Dilithium. You can also upgrade rarity, but that aspect is random - getting to Mark XIV is the primary goal, and you should focus on your weapons first (once you know which weapons you want to stick with). "Epic" or "Gold" is for people that have more money than sense. Or more luck than most. :)

Unfortunately I am not sure if you came back in time to finish the new Winter Event reputation without also spending some Lobi, but if you want to get your hand at a Tier 6 ship, this might be your earliest opportunity to do so without spending real money.

I second @warmaker001b notion: Hold tight to you wallet until you know what you're doing. You don't want to regret any purchases. Get some experience first.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.

Epic weapons aren't Terribly expensive really. If you insist on doing it the hard way it would cost $100 for a perfect set but that's overkill for most people. [Crtd]x3 [dmg] and [crtd]X2 [dmg] [pen] are relatively cheap. If you buy promo packs and hold on to them for a bit and then sell for EC you could get 7-8 weapons for 250 mil give or take. Which could be anywhere from $20-50 depending how patient you are.
