Feature Idea: Test Driving

So I spent the weekend shopping with my dad for a new car, we went around to differant dealerships testing various cars until we got the right one. So that made me think about how an option can be created for all ship stores so that we can sample the goods before we buy. How it could work is you can test a ship it for 1k dilithium an hour, you can equip any of your gear on it, do some PVP/PVE in it, maybe even a story mission. This would be a very good way to make sure A: Your not throwing away your hard-earned cash on a ship you suddenly dont want, B: You get the feel of the ship and you can check out its features, and C: This might help even help you Cryptic in some way.

What do ya'll think?

Works with cars, but not with an mmorpg where you're only spending the price of a relatively good meal at a restaurant for a ship in which you're going to fly around and probably stash away in a few months.
It's not a car. It's not even a large sum of money.

    This has been suggested before:

To include providing all unlocks on tribble and redshirt. Also a test period in which it disappears like snowballs.

when they start charging $5000+ for starships in the c-store test drives might be an option, until then no.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

You used to do this in Tribble. Your Zen would copy over there and you could buy ships on Tribble to test drive. I assume Crpytic got rid of it because the test drive was hurting sales.

They used to release ships for testing on Tribble. They stopped. I imagine because they don't want people testing, since it makes it less likely you'll buy a garbage ship you don't want.

While you may get buyers remorse, Cryptic never gets sellers remorse no matter how unhappy you are... funny how that works.

I am sure the same could be said for players who sell stuff on the exchange and sellers who buy it.
you could always try asking other players on this forum what they think of a ship your thinking of buying.

there may be a few exceptions but at the end of the day most of the ships of a certain tier are pretty even overall, they may have slightly higher of one stat but less of another and vice versa but it basically evens out, most of the differences come from what gear you put on the ship after you buy it.

This is never going to happen. If a ship is good then the players themselves will spread the word and a "test drive" won't be necessary for high sales. If a ship is bad though then giving players the opportunity to test it for free would further harm sales of that ship. Don't get me wrong, I wholheartedly support your idea, but in my opinion Cryptic would greatly harm its sales and therefore is never gonne introduce anything like that.

This I still have 10K zen over on Tribble but no store to spend it in.

Been requested before. Never happened before. Won't happen now. It would only hurt Cryptic's sales. Also, how do you plan to manage the T6 Ship traits?

They are not going to stop making you pay to find out whether or not you like a ship. If they did that, you might not buy it.

A commentary on corporate greed, the Devs confidence in their work, or in the fickle, tempestuous nature of the player base? You decide!

The ships I've stayed with for each toon, I've stayed with VERY much for the long haul. My toons in their Vestas have had them since the Vesta was released. Same with the Dromias another flies. The only toon I switched ships on was my Reman, because of how poor the sci options are. Ultimately though, I settled on a ship based on the fact that both that I tried *had free versions there for the testing.*. The fact that I am now interested in developing that toon and grinding out a C-Store DSD only owes to the fact that I got to test drive it and get used to how it handles. I would not have even *considered* developing that toon without the fact that a test drive option in effect existed for the Obelisk and DSD, to decide what I liked best.

That should tell Cryptic something--I am spending that time in game exactly because of the ability to test drive and know that I am not risking that time on something I'll hate in a few weeks and that will put me off of any further such endeavors.
