Where STO has never gone before...

Remember the episode of TNG where Riker fell in love with someone from an androgynous species, that supposedly "evolved past" the male/female difference for the most part? It would be so fascinating if STO integrated a playable race like that at some point. Another suggestion... I noticed there are at least three races that only allow you to play as a "male" character... but none that have a reversed exclusion. That might be cool. Whatchya think? :)

Since you asked, my thoughts are that unless you have in mind some unique racial trait or skill, you can probably make something you like with the alien creator and just tell yourself it has no gender.

You can already make an alien do that for the most part, the real issue being that gender ties you to outfits that suggest anatomy. The fix would be to let people cross dress and cross hair styles etc. Which brings up the why-bother bit? If you want to be a woman that dresses and looks like a man, roll a man and role-play it -- you can certainly make one look the part in the alien builder. Etc. Or the other way around.

The KDF ranks already have species that we can only play one gender of; Gorn, Lethean, and Nausicaan, even though people have been asking for female counterparts for ages, we've yet to see them, so I suspect they don't exist and that these three species have already [secretly] advanced beyond the typical male/female stage.

In case of the Gorn, there might just be no directly visual difference between male and female. Or just be size differences...

Might be true for Lethean and Nausicaan, too, who knows? We've never seen (visibly) female ones. For all we know, the group that attacked Picard was mixed. ;)

If following reptile traits the females of the species could be even bigger, presumably you can't play them as they can't fit into the turbolifts.

But yes I would like to see a much wider choice when it comes to gender and attire, there are already some great creations out there from careful work with the character editor so more options are always welcome.

I think they're just worried about frying our computer screens at the sight of a Gorn in a pink sundress.

Binary gender is a convenience factor in modeling anatomy and clothing for human/humanoid species, but it's arbitrary in a universe of infinite diversity in infinite combinations, and problematic even for humans. It's definitely arbitrary to attach the label "male" to species with no obvious sexual dimorphism, and that ought to be relatively simple to fix. After that, there should be a continuing effort to make gender options more inclusive, less binary-centric.

Star Trek has made things that aren't repreoductively binary into villains: Borg and Kobali. There has always been that combination of enlightenment and reactionary politics, ethics, emotional response etc.

We never saw a female Saurian, Tellarite, or Pakled...but that didn't stop the devs from making female versions of those races...which no one plays might I add...yet KDF got the shaft...Remans got a female, which also wasn't shown.

    Yet KDF still gets shafted...

If it's that easy then how hard would it be for them to just add a female option? Wouldn't have to work or design a new model...but would allow them to wear feminine gear.

But how does that work for Lethean and Nausicaan...which were more humanoid?

Whilst I can accept that there may be no purpose/difference between Gorn sexes, to say the same for Nausicaan and Lethean is just lazy. As stated, we've got female Reman, Pakled, Tellarite and Saurian, none of which we've ever seen before, why is there no female option for the Nausicaan and Lethean? Not too sure about the Lethean, but I bet people would actually play as a female Nausicaan.

Since female reptiles tend to be larger, my best guess is that those giant Gorn you see roaming around the First city are in fact the females.

Letheans and Nausicaans look pretty reptilian, other than size, reptilians usually look the same, male or female.

The Saurians might be the exception, albeit they might not be 100% reptilian but something in between reptilian and mammal.

How do Nausicaan look reptilian? Saurians look more reptilian than Nausicaan...Cardassians look more reptilian...

They had no problem with making Saurian females...lets just admit it...them not making female Gorn, Nausicaan, and Letheans is just the first in the long line of shafts for the KDF.

I for one would love a female Nausicaan...
