Although it's a bit of an archaic designation, I live in the Dominion of Canada, and up until '82, we used to celebrate Dominion Day (now called Canada Day). In this case "Dominion" was a reference to the various territories that were part of the British Empire, applied much like "Republic" is to the U.S.

Edit: Just found out that the name "Jem'Hadar" was derived from the word "Jemadar", an officer's rank in the Indian Army, so there's that connection, too...
