Any Plans for Star Trek's 50th Anniversary?

Does the foundry community want to do anything special for Star Trek's 50th anniversary? One idea I have if nearly everyone builds a mission for Star trek’s 50th anniversary week, which is from September 4-10th, 2016. I think it would be really cool if every day for a whole week new, special missions would be released in a continuous stream with each celebrating Star Trek in their own way.

At a minimum, 7 authors will need to be on board for this to work.

If we start now we will effectively have a whole year for each author to make their own mission and to plan on which day they want to release it on. Anyone up for this?
More importantly, is this a good idea?

Are there any other ideas on how the foundry community can celebrate Star Trek’s 50th anniversary?

Sounds fun, but 7+ higher quality foundry missions probably isn't special enough for a 50th. We probably need a theme. Time travel to some period in the shows would probably suit, but I think it might be a little more fun trying to make Foundry homages to particular ST episodes that we think encapsulates some important quality of the show (with bonus points for not picking classic episodes).

Well, I can tell you that a lot of us are going to be at Star Trek Las Vegas for the 50th Anniversary. Off the top of my head, the list includes myself, CaptPFDennis, Greendragoon, Zorbane, Johnnysnowball, Woodyvalley, and probably some others I'm forgetting. We had a great time last year.

Making homages to ST episodes does sound like a lot of fun. Though I'm wondering how special these missions will be if there are plenty of foundry (or Cryptic) homages out there already. That bieng said, missions that pick up on key qualities of ST sounds like a perfect way to celebrate its 50th.

Sounds like you and the gang have it covered. Hope y'all have a great time at STLV!

The weakness I think we can exploit is that those almost always cover missions people remember. By emphasizing the obscure and highlighting how that still represents good-ol' trek I think we could make some interesting stuff that feels special for the anniversary.

By "missions" do you mean TV episodes?
In any case, perhaps we should put together a list of the most well known episodes so that it'll be that much easier to pick out the more obscure ones. I imagine "Trouble with Tribbles" would be on that list.

Hmm, I'm gonna have to do some research before I call dibs on anything.

Woops, my bad. I've been forcing myself to do an internal word-replace on episodes/missions for foundry (want to say episodes, keep having to come back to missions). I just forgot to turn the process off. :)

Anyway, it's probably going to come down to personal judgement. I don't think there's any definitive list of "well known" Star Trek episodes (really depends on who you ask and what series they're most interested in) but if you try to say "The Best of Both Worlds is one of the most under-appreciated episodes in all of TNG" then you can probably justify to yourself why you should or shouldn't use that one.

What might help, if you're really not sure, is just to watch some of the seasons and try to find episodes that you personally weren't familiar with (if such is possible). Chances are with this sort of thing, you're probably an acceptable proxy for the average ST fan. :)

If anyone does a homage to Spock's Brain I'm definitely playing that :D.

Here's an idea I have had. A department of temporal investigations collaboration. Have several authors each create a mission where you travel to different points in trek history. We would share maps for the department headquarters and any recurring characters. Memory beta has a good article on the lore for the dti .

    I like this idea.

Would an overarching story for this be something to the tune of "Temporal Investigations needs your help to solve an anomaly in the timestream"? Do you have something else in mind?

No that pretty much would be the direction I would go. I would recommend having it structured in a way that the player could play most of the missions in any order, but have a final mission that ties them together at the end.

It could be a puzzle!

Each mission offers a clue into what the anomaly is with the finale revealing the answer. The overarching challenge would be figuring out what's happening before going into the final mission.
