No, Plasma Explosions aren't OP... EDIT: Cryptic has now "fixed" them by breaking them further. Ugh

praxi5praxi5 Member Posts: 1,562 Arc User
Post "Fix" Edit: This "fix" that they've introduced, by removing Crits entirely, is not what I (nor anyone I think?) had in mind. The problem was never that these consoles could Crit, it was simply their Crit severity and their broken scaling. They should have (properly) fixed it so that it Crit under all Weapons Modifiers (FAW, SS, RF, SV, etc), but lowered the severity of the Crits and the improper scaling.

EDIT: If you think this is a whine because I died in PvP, you're sorely mistaken. Does it make sense to you that you can do 100k damage in the blink of an eye, popping a Cube and the one next to it based off of pure random chance? Does it make sense that something that was nerfed because it was too powerful in PvE (yes, PvE) is now way more powerful than it was before?

First shots of the match, before anyone even had a chance to do anything. Took myself and one other person (that he wasn't even targetting) out in the blink of an eye, before anyone had the chance to react.

That's nearly 100,000 damage, straight to hull, through resists. Over 130% of my ship's entire hull value (Fleet Pathfinder) from a random 2.5% proc for "free" damage.

Make sense to anyone?

Before you start saying "But... but... but... PvP!" consider how much damage it's doing in PvE as well. People report getting over 30% (sometimes upwards of 50%) of their damage from Plasma Explosions alone - a 2.5% chance proc for free damage, let me remind you. Think I'm overexaggerating their broken nature? Hint: Take a look at the tooltip for explosion damage on a Mk XIV Very or Ultra Rare console and compare it to a Mk XIV Epic.

Spoiler Alert: The scaling gives the Epic version a huge boost.

This is the "nerfed" version because the previous version was OP. And it's even more powerful than before. GG Cryptic.

sounds like a Romulan plasma explosion, Romulans really know how to use their plasma!

Joking aside that looks like some kinda exploit.

"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."

It's not an exploit, since it's technically working according to it's design.

A terrible, horrible, incredibly short-sighted design.

I think the plasma explosions should cap out at 1-1.5k each given how it seems intended to just be a little extra proc and not your entire weapon.

It reminds me of the old Borg invisi-torps that would randomly just one shot you out of the blue in the classic Elite queues from back in the day. Good times.

Cryptic are usually slow off the mark, but at least they tend to scale back the stuff that is ridiculously OP eventually. Once enough people use it (or 'exploit' as they would describe it) in such a way it is detrimental to their content they might decide to do something about it.

At this point, I think Borticus unfortunately classifies them as working as intended. Same goes for part gens with trait which are still over performing IMO.

I really think they should make all pvp zones level 50 (40 would be better) like space battle zones. That would take a lot of heat out of those plasma explosions and help to shelter pvp from further power creep.

Haha... I got hit with 50k in two hits yesterday in Kerrat. Straight to hull, one right after the other. Faw seems to be the only issue.

They are going to nerf it, but I figure they're still making money off of purchases and upgrades. That's so jaded, but what do you expect? People are gonna be so pissed when they fix it and they kinda should be. Cryptic doesn't acknowledge it's a bug, and players confuse borked with meta.

and how long has this been reported?

The "revamped" +Plasma embassy consoles are doing exactly what Cryptic intended them for. As soon as these were in, the PVP crowd found out about this issue but of course, Cryptic does nothing about it. The only ones that should be in love with facing this kind of stuff are FBP Builds B)

This is shield bypassing stuff that crits for very high numbers. And of course, by far not the only shield bypassing attack in this game. There are many these days.

The Plasma Explosions issue however is but one of the many reasons that PVP is screwed in this game however.

I say leave it the way it is (and I don't even run "plasma doping" builds) but add a new craftable console to the game that specifically negates the bonus plasma damage from those embassy consoles.

In other words, if you craft a SINGLE special console and have it equipped then your ship will receive ZERO damage even if those plasma explosion consoles proc for 100k worth of damage.

Problem instantly solved. People like yourself have a solution to this "problem" and "Plasma dopers" can still have their fun in PVE ... and are still effective against people in PVP if opponents aren't smart enough to craft the special console and use it.

This would also be a better solution for Cryptic because people will still grind for the plasma explosion embassy consoles and now people will also grind for a special console to negate plasma explosion damage to their ships.
In the immortal words of Captain Sisko: "It may not be what you believe, but that doesn't make it wrong."

Don't believe the lies in this forum. I am NOT an ARC user. I play STO on Steam or not at all.

Since it came out. I don't know why Praxis even bothers.

I have heard people hitting close to 250K per tick.

It's futile, but I have to keep trying.
Faw seems to be the only issue.

Yeah, FAW is the problem. It's the only thing that it Crits with - and it Crits hard, as you can see.

Simples, Make PvE weapons/specialisations/traits unusable in PvP. Give PvP its own weapons/consoles/engine/shields/deflector locker. Access to standard trainable and captain powers still withstanding.

So basically other than power trays, equipment is standardise across the board for PvP.

PvE get to keep their overpowered FUN toys and PvP get to fight pilot to pilot and it becomes a battle of wits, skill, timing and whose last to fall asleep as theres no surprises as everything is at a equal level, where everyone is equal, and matches take forever, as everyone is equal, and no one is able to kill the other, as everyone is equal, and on one has an unfair advantage, as everyone is equal, and then PvP dies even further as everyone is equal, and being equal means no one can kill the other, as everyone is equal, and in being equal matches go on forever, as every one is equal.

So, you mean to tell me that you think that these things are NOT overpowered? You don't think people getting more than a third of their PvE damage from these consoles is overpowered? You don't think wiping players (who are buffed and defensive) without even targetting them in your blind fire AoE isn't OP? You don't think that putting out more damage than the HP a standard level Cube NPC has in the blink of an eye is OP?

For the record, I don't mind getting beat. I like getting beat - it means that there was actually a challenge, and now I've got to try and combat it.

There is no way these are WAI - they're broken so that they Crit only with FAW right now. That is, in no way, WAI.

Further, the change was intended as a nerf to the damage that Plasma Burns were putting out (in PvE, keep in mind). It's irrational to think that them doing more damage than before, as the result of a nerf, is working as intended. As I stated before, the scaling is also off when upgraded to Epic vs Very or Ultra Rare.

And, again, SS3 was not nerfed due to PvP. The Devs did their own internal testing and found that it was overperforming, according to their own standards. An SS nerf was welcomed by PvPers, yes, but it was not the result of PvPers anymore than Ionic Turbulence getting nerfed.

(Before anyone starts, the full range of the disable on Ionic Turbulence WAS broken. As noted by Geko himself, as he had no idea it was doing how bad it was before it was fixed. Further, it's more than reasonable to suspect that the reason the fix was pushed out was because of the Herald's usage of Ionic Turbulence against players - people still complain about it now, can you imagine what it would have been like if it hadn't been nerfed and still had it's "full lockdown" state?)

LOL. No wonder I thought cannons were s*cking so when I recently fit a few again. :)

But Bort *did* revise the plasma consoles after they were found to be broken. And I kinda like em this way.

Yeah... that makes no sense. I could believe that they are just tired of messing with the code, because they seem to always have a bug with it. They're calling it WAI because... well... we like the bugs, right? And I can admit that I, too, hope the universe ends before I have to clean up my messes.
I say leave it the way it is (and I don't even run "plasma doping" builds) but add a new craftable console to the game that specifically negates the bonus plasma damage from those embassy consoles.

    That's a well-thought compromise. But...

This isn't about pvp. It's about free power coming from an unintended source. That's why I think they're going to nerf it. Cryptic will sell power to you all day long. But that much, and at those prices... yeah it's getting nerfed.

While I don't PVP and I don't benefit from these consoles, I think they should remove the chance mechanic on these consoles, normalize the projected damage they should give and distribute it as a 100% proc to energy weapons. That way it can be countered in PVP (since it is now constant predictable damage rather than burst) and they can still provide the DPS assist for PVE.

Of course there would be stuff that needs to be reworked (again) such as how stacking would affect these consoles (since damage is now 100% guaranteed) and how much damage they are intended to put out in the first place.

If you dont want to die in PvP they have finally caved in and just added an ability called "Invincible" you can use that makes it so you cant die.

That 2 minute CD in between Invincible being available is a long time to die many horrible deaths.

More like critting on FaW only...which is completely BS and shows the devs are 100% intentionally steering the game towards beams only if this is WAI.

    I fixed that for you.

By the way, why would I buy a trait? I never die. My ship puts out a decoy fireball... I press a button in the middle of the screen... and my ship quickly warps to the side of the map, in perfect condition and ready for battle. My enemies believe they have destroyed me... hehe.. suckers.

This is a free ability. I use it all of the time.

Sorry you feel that way, but it's a serious suggestion. Cryptic has proven unable to separate PvP and PvE, they can't support both features accurately (it could be debated that they can even support one of them) and the bulk of players are PvE. The logical course of action if this is going to be the way is to remove the PvP aspect of the game.

Overall, the game would be much better off. Sorry if it's not what people want to hear, but it's the truth. PvP should be omitted from this game. Even the people that play it admit that it sucks and isn't any fun. Those of us that play PvE (the vast majority) constantly have to put up with threads like this asking a company that already regularly nerfs abilities into the ground to nerf us even further.

I'm sorry if you feel the suggestion doesn't contribute, but it does. The only player suggestions that Cryptic listens to are ones like this asking for power reduction. The source of these requests is usually someone that dies really fast in PvP. Enough already.

Oh...so your saying the Plasma Explosion is balanced and isn't bugged by giving big boosts to FaW and FaW alone? Not to mention a huge advantage...

If PvP is axed then all this game would be is running the same few STF's over and over and over and over...maybe people don't like doing the same thing over and over again and just because you're so boring person who may find fun in it not everyone does.

I can't help you're so weak that you need bugged and overpowered abilities to make it through PvE...maybe we should axe PvE and only be a PvP game since apparently they can't balance PvE without everyone using the same old bugged builds...maybe they should eliminate PvE since so many people complained that something besides FaW spamming is actually doing good DPS, thus they demand it nerfed.
