Ugly R&D weapons

I just recently upgraded a Phaser Split Beam Rifle from the R&D system. All excited in upgrading the weapon I've been wanting for a while,..to my dismay when I get it to MK X, I find these ugly hologram graphics appeared on it. The Phaser Rifle looked so cannon before the upgrade. Now it looks like cheesy TRIBBLE. Has this been brought up before? How many of you like/disliked the upgraded look of your R&D weapons? I wish I could take a poll to get it changed. At least enable/disable visuals like on space equipment.

Just like normal drop gear or vendor offerings, crafted standard weapons will change appearance based on mark level. So a Mk II Split Beam will change to the appearance of a Mk X if upgraded to Mk X.

I know that. I'm just saying the MK X looks ugly as hell and not "epic" at all.

Elite Fleet Ground Weapons look better than the standards IMO. Only downside is they are faction appropriate damage types (Fed Phaser KDF Disruptor, would like Plasma for Romulans).

Though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I'm pretty fond of how in general the Ground KDF Fleet Weapons look. They look better than the standard Mk XI+ weapons and not have the stupid spikes, blades that the standards do. Canon-wise, Klingon ranged weapons did not have those features throughout the entirety of Star Trek.

I can understand wanting to differenciate the mark levels, but I think they overdid it with the Disruptor bolt weapons and Pulsewave.

You should see the standard Mk XI+ Disruptor Pistols. They have dual blades sticking out the sides that are bigger than the pistol itself. It looks hilarious when you enable viewable holstered weapons.

So basically from what everyone is saying, is that I'm stuck with a higher level weapon that looks worse/less cannon than the lower level one. Well that's disappointing. Only MMO I've ever played that does that.

Well... yea... pretty much. Unless you pick up the Delta Rep Compression Phaser Rifle, which uses the canon "fork" rifle model that was used in Star Trek: Voyager. Can get that at Mk XII. Primary fire is a 4 shot burst autorifle, secondary is a wide beam unless target is exposed, then it becomes a Mini Orbital Strike.

I'd have the Compression rifle on my entire away team if it didn't have that stupid orbital strike. Decent canon ground weapons for TNG-DS9-VOY era are rather sparse.

If you think that's bad, take a look at the TR 116. All that grinding for one of those gaudy high MK phaser rifles with the barrel covered in pieces of broken glass, just with different stats-they didn't bother to give it a model that looks like the TR 116 from the show. Even though the craftable version is a rerelease of the older version.

Actually... in a thread in the Art section we got the attention of one of the art guys asking for canon weapons we'd like to see in game. Many of us dug up some reference pics of various weapons ranging from the "Assault" Phaser from ST5/6 to... you guessed it... canon TR-116. In fact, the canon TR-116 was one of the most requested in that thread, and even acknowledged by the art guy. If I could dig up that thread again I would link it.

I wish phaser weapons looked like they did on the shows. Pistols/Rifles looked like the ones in TNG/DS9/VOY
But the least they could do is remove those silly holograms they put on them

They still haven't a single canon TNG-era weapon (Type-1, Type-2, Type-3) aside from the Delta-rep compression rifle, but that's for some reason a rapid fire bolt rifle with orbital strike, instead of a beam rifle as shown on-screen. Also, not a single canon Klingon weapon (even the Bat'leths look wrong, they're super inflated).

They really don't have a lucky hand with canon stuff.

To be honest, the TV show couldn't make up it's mind on both types of phaser rifles in Voyager if they were going to be bolts or beams. The First Contact rifle and the compression rifle fire both types at different times. It's just inconsistent VFX work.

But STOs weapons offer two fire modi.

If canon now shows a weapon which 4 out of 5 times on screen fires a beam and 1 out of 5 times is shown firing singular bolts, how can this weapon be translated into STO? The answer is obvious: Primary fire: Auto-Bolts, Secondary fire: Airstrike! ... wait, what?... pig-36.gif

Yes, there's also the wide-beam, but fo that take a look at the Type-III (TNG) - primary fire beam, secondary fire wide-beam. But we don't have that. The first contact rifle (the DS9 TM identifies as a Type-III variant but I can't recall the name, something like Type-IIIa1 or something) also could be implemented this way. Primary bolts, secondary beams.

I like the visuals when firing a standard Non-Adapted MACO rifle,
however my character is a slightly petite, pink haired female engineer,
and the regular MACO rifle looks comical with her holding it. it's far too large for her frame :pensive:
I ended up getting the Dyson set and giving my MACO set to my Vulcan Male BoFF, Zelpok.

"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."

Since i made the tread, I noticed that people have posted about this before. I've played many MMO's and I have noticed that out of all those games, STO doesn't change and give the community what it wants. This is like the worst MMO for that. I'm starting to see why people are leaving now...
