i am hopefully not the only one that feels this way. but i think something that would be an awesome addition to Star Trek Online would be that when you reach a certain level, you can fully build and design your own ships, based upon parts of ships that you have full access to. and these ships must fall within guidelines of whatever side you are on...
but who knows maybe i'm not the only one...

Are you the first to suggest this, or variations of it? No...
Are you the first Cryptic will tell "won't happen"? No...
I would be with you all the way, but I am affraid I agree with the technical limitations Cryptic has presented in regards to this:
The problem is, that they would have to map every single piece, current and future, back and forth to each other.
While for the more traditional ships, this would not be "much" of a problem, ships like the Defiant, Saber, Patrol Escorts would present a HUGE problem in regards to this.
And then theres the MVAM's and of cause the fact that many of the models probably don't have filled polyes around the areas that you usually don't see.
It's been requested over and over during the past

It's been requested over and over since Beta, but the sad truth is: It's just not practical with the STO engine.
Cross-faction would be the better way to go unless they want to make one for each faction. Which actually isnt harder, just takes longer.
That did not work too well the last time...
This. It went pearshaped for sure.
I understand you all too well. I can imagine that the engine used just wouldn't be able to keep up and have the adaptability that would be needed. I guess i'll just have to dream some more... maybe in the future a game engine will be released that can handle that... although I know to an okay degree there was a computer game that did managed ok with various shapes to ships. But I know that most companies do not like to use each other's stuff...
Thank you again.
Every time I see one of these posts I just imagine in my head some of the monstrosities some people will come up with :P
