Customizing Your Weapon's Colors

lsegnlsegn Member Posts: 594 Arc User
So, I know this horse has been beaten to death but I have a different proposal. Lockbox and Reputation weapons come with unique visuals and audio so how about an R@D project at say Crafting level 10 where you can turn in one of these weapons per type (one cannon and one beam weapon) in its respective R@D school and unlock the ability to use those visuals on any weapon with that damage type! You want Coalition Disruptor proc but you want them green? No problem! You want Elite Disruptor's with Elachi style FX? Go right ahead! Just right click the weapon and adjust the visuals as you see fit!

This way people still know the damage type you have but you can customize the looks to your liking! I think this would foster a lot more visual variety in the game, Antiproton Spamboats could atleast have four different visual choices to pick from!

Why should we have to use ugly weapons to get a nice effect?

There's also a few cool mission weapons Like Dominion Polaron that I would kill to have the visuals for!

Bonus points to Cryptic for letting as pick the Audio and Visuals separately!

Only if I can get rainbow phasers with ponies.

"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."

Well if your willing to burn 200 Lobi you can have Rainbow colored Antiproton weapons! That would be so awesome!

    I'm not opposed to this.
Though I must say, I tend to like standardization of things like weapon type color, but It seems with lockbox and rep weapons, that it's too late to stick to any kind of standardization.
Just for PvP purposes, its nice to know what energy type people are using against you. Minor issue I have with mixing up the color's, but as stated, that ship has already sailed.
Make it so, I see no reason not to implement OP's idea.

People love customization. Especially in MMO's.
I was really happy that Cryptic allowed use of the full color palette on all ships recently. Small, but major improvement to ship designing. MOAR CUSTOMIZATION is GOOD !

LOL, when this game launched, people were able to customize their energy weapon colors. Cryptic very quickly ended that.

This would only allow you mix and match the visuals of weapons with the same damage type. That was my solution to keep PvPers from bitching. You should be able to tell what damage type they're using pretty easily, and it's actually canon. In TOS and one episode of Enterprise we see the same weapons with different visuals. Oh and DS9 where the Klingons use red and green Disruptor's.

It would be nice to see different colored weapons. There's a decent variety of colors even if you only go by what's on the shows, like blue phasers and red disruptors, I'd like to have blue phasers and photon torpedoes on my fed ships, as well as green pho-torps for my Klingons and Romulans, all with the same sounds of course.

I made a thread about this a month ago, got told it was tried once. A different idea could be changing its sound, though.

I suppose as long as you can only change colors to different types of same weapon type I wouldn't mind, like kittyflofy I wouldn't mind some orange bio-molecular phasers.

It was a console command that was a leftover bit of code from Champions. Apparently it's inclusion was an oversight.

So basically everyone would get antiproton's, colour them what ever colour they want and render all weapon types pointless?

No, as I've clearly stated several times this would only be within each energy type. If you Have Antiproton you could make them look like Radiant, Fluidic or Voth Antiproton and whatever other types are released in the future.

I can make my Crafted Epic Phasers look like those pretty Blue Andorian Phasers and visa versa. It would really be neat to mix graphics and colors! Imagine Elachi Crescent Weapons in Coalition Blue or Resonant Diruptor White! But that might be going too far, and FYI the point of using a weapon type has much less to do with its color than you seem to think. I don't use Antiproton weapons because they're pretty.

This is something we could do at launch, and Holly Amos (or some unnamed person that Cryptic says is at CBS) said "this is the evil work of the devil and must be purged from this game forever!!!!!!!1111111oneoneone!!!!!". So, not going to happen.
  • markhawkmanmarkhawkman Member Posts: 35,236 Arc User
Actually it was never meant to exist in STO. Champions has actual UI buttons for this. STO never did. The only way it worked in STO was a console command.

I thought the "justification" of said feature's removal was from Geko, commenting that "Players need to be able to identify the weapon(s) type of their wingmen / opposition via sight alone"...

Who knows - the story could be "Urban legend" status by now...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

To rob a line: [quote: Mariemaia Kushrenada] Forum Posting is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever. However, opinions will change upon the reading of my post.[/quote]

Yeah I've got no problem with it. The colour of a beam isn't going to do much. Same procs, same sounds and only visible during combat.

I know people don't choose weapon type because of the colour. My point was if you could have any colour on your weapons everyone would pick antiproton. Which is regarded as the best type at the moment.

Personally I would use romulan plasma beams that looked/sounded like retro beam phasers.

That said I didn't realise you said keep choice within energy type, my bad. But I don't see the point in it. Only change I'd see people making is correcting cryptics mistake with bio phasers and make them orange.

Anyway, I would like more customisation options but I just don't think this is a worthwhile use of dev time. Sorry.

But each of those is still identifiable.

Personally I think it's best to file it in the category of features that were never meant to exist. Like the Setslottype command.

Yeah, they're still identifiable as Disruptor type weapons. All I'm asking for is to be able to mix and match the different visuals within each damage type. That's it.

I'd have to vote against this.

This has been discussed and shot down ad nauseum, for one primary reason: The color of the weapon being used is a clue as to what defensive system you need to defend against it.

If i enter a pvp or pve and see yellow, i know to hit my tetryon defensive loadout, if i see purple, i hit the ap denfense, etc.

rather than seeing freely customizable, what i'd prefer to see is standardization to the secondary colors based on secondary function--for example, if i've got ap with a plas mod, the beam should be purple with green highlights.

Colors are at least partially derived from the TV show. Which is why dominion Polaron does those funny wavy beams.
