Description of the Tempest Class Starship

Can any give a good description of the Tempest Class Starship other than round saucer & strange shaped nacelles. I guess I'm looking for more of a tech specs description.

It's purely speculative but, given the time it was released, I tend to think that it's a streamlined version of the Dervish class, designed in response to the environmental effects encountered in the Dyson Spheres and Fluidic Space.

She's a sleek, compact vessel, with all the hallmarks of Starfleet design while being clearly arranged with combat in mind. What appear to be extra impulse arrays line the surfaces of the Nacelle pylons and possibly provide an extra vectored thrust aspect to supplement the sizable impulse engines and manoeuvring thrusters. So she looks like she can (and does) "turn on dime". In keeping with lessons learned during the Klingon War the Nacelles have been armoured and the profile of the bussard collectors reduced to minimise exposure to incoming attack. The overall result from the changes to the spaceframe is a smaller cross section profile with all the visibility and defensive advantages that entails.

The Deflector array is less exposed than those on previous Patrol Escort designs and is further protected from damage by armoured vanes. All this has had no apparent detrimental effect as the array is still capable of matching the performance of those equipped to Research Science Vessels like the Hope class.

The weapons array on the Tempest exceeds that of most Federation Escort designs. In addition to the standard 4-3 arrangement, the Tempest can mount a potent Nadion Saturation Bomb system for area denial and causing significant damage to slow moving targets. To facilitate a strafing attack strategy and provide extra defensive fire in the unlikely event that an opponent manages to remain on its aft quarter, the designers included a rapid firing, narrow arc dual phaser cannon array as a "tail gun". This array is potent enough to test a target's shields following an attack run and capable of handling any homing ordnance that might be launched as a counter attack.
Although the class can be retrofitted with energy weapons of any type, the "stock" systems provided by the Tempest are best synergised with a phaser weapons package.

The command and control systems of the Tempest class have not been skimped on either. As an advanced vessel, it has been developed with a multirole capability in mind akin to the vessels of the mid to late 23rd century. By eliminating the often supernumerary "Ensign" station and installing additional system redundancies, ships of the class have expanded Engineering systems and the capability to adapt their bridge assignment between the classic Tactical arrangement of other Patrol Escorts and that of a more Science or Engineering base specialisation. In doing so the Tempest can now provide the complete adaptable support package during fleet operations and the ability to operate with a level of independence and flexibility unheard of for Federation ship of its classification.

With a well experienced crew the Tempest class offers a "jack of all trades" capability that, though not a master of any one aspect of starship performance comes very close to achieving it when given the opportunity.

Best thing about the Tempest though is the Nadion Bomb! - Max. One-Hit: 369,711 (Nadion Saturation Bomb) :D

Wow Xarynn have you ever written a Star Trek technical manual. That was awesome!
