Hello, I am sorry if there is already a new play post somewhere in the forums. I have been watching Star Trek Next Gen and ST: Enterprise. Was thinking to watch Voyager next. Anyway, I got hooked into the ST universe however I had been shying away into playing ST Online as it is by PWI. To be honest, I had a really bad experence with PWi MMO which really made me have trus issues with PWI company.
I really want to try ST online however. Would like some quick reviews of the game if you guys can provide. I'm also just afraid this is just another pay to win game...
I am also looking to make friends for when I start of the ST online

If you do try it, I suggest giving all three factions a go if you aren't really "feeling" the one you start with. Romulans will need to ally with either the Federation or Klingons eventually, though.
Also, don't let your captain's career dictate the ship types you fly. Any captain type can fly anything, and each career brings something to the table. So fly what's fun! Experiment.
As far as pay to win...well not so much, there is a lot of good gear out there if you are willing to grind here and there. Plus the game offers free event ships every now and then that are very good too. If you're an unpatient person (like myself) you'll probably end up opening your wallet for one thing or other
But I know a lot of my fleet mates bought Zen ships by simply grinding the heck out of Dilithium so you can get like 99% of everything in the game for free by just playing.

I believe it is safe to say, we are all fans of the Star Trek Universe, so that gives us all a starting point. Now sure we bicker back and forth like any true Geek will, over the various minutia, but in the end, the people are all great.
As for the game, you get what you put into it. There are very few things I would say are "Must have" for a free account anyways. The Shared Bank is a good start, I would even suggest the T1 Enterprise ship, as hey free weapons for all your Fed toons.
One can play the game with the ships given to ya up till level 40 or so, and even then, there is a number of ships on the exchange can be bought for peanuts. I've seen peeps use the APU or even the Malon are usable.
That being said, it doesn't take that long to save up dilithium to trade for zen, and buy a new shiny if you want.
If you are looking for a group to run with, My own fleet Xenocorp would be happy to show you the ropes, no strings attached. just PM me or toss me a mail @F9thRet in game.
I will also add, things may be a bit wonky today, given we have a rather large patch in the works, so please don't think things are always as wonky as today may be.
Again, welcome to the game, and I hope you have some fun with it, as that really is the bottom line, having fun.
I guess my next step is to find a noob friendly guild/faction/"fleet".
Well this isn't a recruitment forum but hey...you asked so, give us a look over www.libertytaskforce.com we do have few requirements one being that you have to register to the website before getting an invite, we're very community based. You may not know what this is but our fleet stores access opens after 100,000 total contributions to the fleet which is...eh about par with most other fleets.
Anywho good luck and I'm sure you'll enjoy the game

As for the game itself, I think as a new player you're not going to see many faults or problems with the game that us old timers do. Alts are basically punished since the Delta Rising expansion, and there is a very steep grind post 50 and 60 for what was once a casual game.
As for pay to win, strictly speaking it doesn't exist, but most of best stuff only comes from lockboxes, and is extremely expensive to get via ingame means without luck opening a lockbox. Powercreep and balance issues are out of control between lockbox stuff, specializations, and fleet gear which means there is an absolutely massive performance gap between a new fresh 60 and someone who is "done" and optimally geared.
That said, you don't need any of that stuff to play the game, and with some work and game knowledge you can even do advanced and some elite queues without that stuff.
You can enjoy what is there, there is plenty of fun to be had, but it is the same company you dislike, and likely has many of the same problems in those other games.
I can vouch for this myself as well. I'm one of the nutjobs who grinds out C-Store stuff, usually using events to give me a boost. Got the Mogh, Vesta pack, and even the whole Delta Pack that way (Yea... I was that crazy to grind out THAT particular bundle). Once you learn how to work the Dilithium Exchange and figure out the patterns, all it takes is time and knowing places that have the best payout for Dilithium. The only things you won't be able to get via in game means are Veteran rewards (Subscribe/lifetime) and the Steam Starter pack (Available via Steam). Other than those... everything you see in the C-Store is available with time.

Nope. My main's a Trill.
Also... having 5 alts, using events, and knowing where to get the most DL for my time helped. But I won't lie... it was a helluva grind and I actually did burn out at one point. At another point I caught the flu. But when I finally got it... felt pretty dang good.
Now if only the DL Exchange would come down more so I can start on my Negh'Tev for my KDF... >.<

As a previous PWI player coming to STO. You will notice this game is 100x better than PWI especially in terms of economy. You don't need to spend $3000.00 on a set of armor to keep up on STO like you do on PWI.
When I first came to STO I was like wow!! This game is so much better! The people on STO are better also.
This game is far away from pay to win. You don't need to pay anything but if you are like me you will end up tossing money on anyways for the little things like inventory/banks slots, outfits, more duty officer slots etc. I'm sure you have dumped money in to PWI as its nearly impossible to play that game without dumping cash in to it. Its a form of entertainment and honestly it lasts longer than going to the movies :P
If you like Star Trek and are coming from PWI I guarantee you will love this game! You will notice how much easier it is to do things and get somewhere in the game. I pitty any new player who starts PWI, that game is really hard to get anywhere on.
My gf and I played PWI for around 3-4 years. We have moved to STO and have been here for little over a year now.
This game gives you a "relief" feel after playing PWI.
PWI is a good game but its truly too hard for the average person to get anywhere. Even dumping hundreds of dollars on the game its still hard to get anywhere. Over the course of playing PWI I spent around 4 grand and I don't even have rank 9 armor. I have 1 char with full Lunar G16, thats sad...
Take note that my honesty posted above does not reflect the PVP side of things. I did not pvp on PWI because unless you had a $3000-$5000 set of Rank 9 armor fully sharded out you have no chance. I do not PVP on STO either so I cant speak on PVP if it is pay to win or not. But STO in general is not pay to win. Converting Dilithium to Zen is about 700% better than PWI. Trying to convert in game money to Zen on PWI is ridiculous. Trying to make in game money on PWI is too hard unless you merch all day long buying low selling high. You pretty much have to live as a cat shop.
Edit:
On a side note one thing I wish STO had that PWI does, is the ability to pick up your gf and hold them and give smooches haha. Ability to get married was cool too.
Game Devs even get on STO sometimes and will be in the zone chat with you. Ive seen this a few times. On Vulcan and on Risa 1-2 weeks ago. Also Captain Smirk and Trendy do the live streaming and often get on the game and you can go hang out around them. And Captain Smirk the community manager will even accept your friend request :P
STO is great in so many ways that other games are not and don't even come close to comparing.
Lot of these complainers on the forums don't realize how good they have it on STO and how great the staff for this game is.

Ahh ok, I dont visit the forums much but I have noticed him never logging on anymore.
I bet Trendy would accept a friend request too though
1) Make a Federation, Federation-allied Romulan, Klingon-allied Romulan, and a Klingon. (If new people get 5 character slots, save it for after you decide what you like to play best.) This way you can see all the different versions of the story. Even if you don't like KDF or Rom-KDF, I suggest keeping them so that you can farm dilithium with them. (But feel free to delete them and start over if you wish.)
2) This game is free, and everything in it can be gotten if you grind enough for it. Even the stuff in the C-store can be acquired by grinding dilithium and converting it to zen.
3) Read up on what ships are available at end-game, and what ones you like best. (Look at their stats, their visuals, etc.)
Support 90 degree arc limitation on BFaW! Save our ships from looking like flying disco balls of dumb!
Best CM we've had for a while. I wasn't around much during Branflakes' tenure as CM, but I heard good things about him too.

This is not a good place to ask for advises. Because people usually is not going to be honest, and you will only read positive arguments about the game reading a lot of condescendent people and lifetime subs (trying to justify their buy for example) and so on. Of course some users will be honest but the problem is, you can be banned just for saying negative things about the game or the devs, so they will never have the "liberty" to really give you a honest review.
My advise is, that dont ask for advises, just try the game. Its free and you dont need to pay for anything so, you not going to lose anything, just time. It is NOT a pay to win game, thats for sure. As long as you dont throw any money in the game (mark these words, i am a taking a risk of being banned.. lol) you will be fine and you will regret nothing.
If after you try the game you dont understand anyting you can always ask. And btw if you play for PVP dont, this game has no PVP.
This is what im talking about. If you think cryptic doesnt know where the problem is by now (the lag thing is happening since months ago) you are more naive than you think. Hell even we know where the problem is (besides other things) but cryptic just cant recognize it, because they dont want period. Yes im talking about cogentco besides other things. They dont need traceroutes or watever. And so you now, Trendy is just a mod, so she will never be able to get part of the servers fixing procedures or watever. I mean, seriously?? sigh. From someone new i will understand so much innocent behaviour, but i dont think you are so new, im a right??
I actually figured out the ZEN pattern in PWI. The Zen value are highest during/nearest to maintenance day. It is pretty much a bell curve. But yes, I was a Wizard in Pwi with full r9s3 and full JOSD...... Yet class balance is so awful... I should of invested having such equipment on a Psy...
But from the sounds of things, if I can survive PWI, it seems I can survive STO a lot easier. I might add you to my friends list due to you being a PWi player.
The point I was making was Trendy is engaging with the community a lot more than Smirk did. Even going so far as to ask for input from players when certain regions seem to be having connection issues like when some European players seemed to have a problem.

I agree on that. But thinking that she has "powers" to influence on other things.. is a bit naive.

Since this a free to play game you might as well give it a shot. That is the reason why I started to play the game back in Jan 2014. I don't consider this a P2W game, then again this is the only MMO game I play. However, if your intention is to play the PvP aspect of the game (kinda been neglected for a long time and considered dead), then you could consider it P2W because you are going up against players to have spend time grinding or spending real money to get Zen to buy ships and gear.
Since you are basically starting to play STO at the end of the 2015 Risa Summer Event you will not be able to earn a free Tier 6 (T6) starship; flyable when you are level 50. T6 starships generally sell for 3,000 Zen (735,000 worth of refined dilithium based on the current exchange rate), or $30. That excludes any sales. But not to worry, there are 3 events every year where you can earn a free T6 ship; Anniversary (February), Summer (June), and Winter (December).
Just play the game to find out if you will like it or not. If you end up not having much fun, then simply uninstall the game and move on.
