The daily is supposed to give you the supplies to make a Superior Upgrade Tech for the school you chose for your Daily. This may explain the perceived disrepancy, if the Superior Upgrade recipes also contain the same inequality. We'll give it another look to make sure that the provided supplies match.

Another reason people might want the very rare materials is to craft the special items available from the different schools, such as the omni-directional beam array and the TR-116B sniper rifle. You might want to consider assigning at least one daily to each very rare material. Notably, Craylon Gas is missing.

    2. The very rare materials awarded by fleet research dailies are not evenly distributed. Argonite Gas appears three times, and Craylon Gas not at all.

So it's not random after all, interesting. Getting the materials for one superior per day isn't something that gets me super excited but it's not super meeeh either.

The investigative research assignments however do duly qualify for meeeh. The construction project description did state:
Completing this project will allow all Fleet members to accept Duty Officer Assignments that provide additional research. These assignments reward various R&D Materials, R&D Research XP Boosts, and more.
At least it did during the first iteration(s); I am not building another fleet lab to see if the descriptions have changed just now.
While it is technically the truth that there are 'multiple' investigative assignments (to be precise three) you can only ever access one of them. And the value of those to me is questionable at best. As I mentioned earlier the value of auto-applied r&d bonus boosts trends towards zero on my characters.
Even when on a crit you get no r&d materials whatsoever (lab provisions are 'not' r&d materials). So where are all the space riches that the description implied?

Why not for example give us another three assignments that salvage powered alien artifacts for spare parts, which would certainly improve the popularity of the good old NADORC immensely again. On tier 1 salvage it for some materials only, on tier 2 for a r&d mini pack worths of materials and components and with tier 3 make it a full r&d pack worths of materials and components.

Or even go all the way and give us assignments that let us once a day convert one type of r&d material into another type of the same rarity. *gasps*
Start with 100 common/uncommon materials on tier1. Add 100 rare on tier 2 and with tier 3 add the possibility to convert 10 very rare materials.
Ceterum censeo Otha supplendum in praemiis.
