★ A Comprehensive Player's Guide to Star Trek Online ★

The Great Forum Migration is continuing and while the dust settles on these new forums, here's an idea for something different we can do: Compile a book. Not just any book, but a book that will serve useful to new players and old in their journeys on STO. The book will be a user friendly guide hosted right here on the forums, help drive traffic as it were. But more importantly, it's a chance for the knowledgeable and skilled among us to actually do something few online group of folks gets lucky to do: write a book together! It will take time and many hands on the project to complete, but once we get it done, it will be something we can be proud of having accomplished.

★ The Plan

For each chapter of the book, there will be a list of topics covered. Writers knowledgeable in a certain topic will submit articles about that topic. If two articles are written on the same topic, the more professional presentation will be selected. The articles should be simple, direct, factual. Think ease of use. Writers shouldn't worry about typos, volunteer editors can review and perfect the articles once the writers have posted.

Pictures will be included throughout the finished product and other volunteers with good graphics abilities can help taking those. Volunteer youtubers can include video tutorials to include with a topic provided they are up to standard. Also, artists and comics designers can volunteer to make witty single page comics to introduce each chapter.

The information will then be grouped according to their relevant topics and compiled into chapters. The chapters will be worked on in order from first to last. Once it's organized, finished pages will posted in their book form. Thus we will add page by page until the book is done.

Players who write articles, volunteer or contribute content will be credited by default or can be anonymous if they choose. The work is voluntary and free, with no financial benefit to be made by anyone including myself.

The book will be divided into the following chapters, they can be modified or added as needed:

★ Chapters

1) Installation- this part will deal with technical requirements and guide the player through installation.
2) Membership, Factions, Careers & Characters- differences in membership levels, how to become a lifetime member; info to guide a player on faction and career selection, through how to create, model and style a character.
3) Leveling- will include leveling methods and rank info.
4) Builds- what they do and how to get it right.
5) Skills- their purpose and guides on their effective use.
6) Specialization- info about spec points and how to put the abilities to use to the player's advantage.
7) Bridge officers- abilities, how they work and how to apply them effectively.
8) Duty officers- how to get 'em, use 'em, make the most out of 'em and dump 'em.
9) Missions: Episodes & STF's- info on each and guides for doing them properly.
10) Reputation- how to upgrade, gear and ability info and how to use them.
11) Currency: EC, Dilithium & Lobi- how to make them and not go broke.
12) Research & Development- leveling schools, how and where to find R&D materials, how to craft good stuff and what it takes.
13) Fleets- guides on marks, credits and how to build one through to Tier 5.
14) Exploration- destination guides, sector space, systems, what to look for and where you find it.
15) Appendix- Because it takes all that to get to the operating room. Nurse, pass the scalpel please. These Easter eggs need to be opened very carefully.

If you are knowledgeable in any of these subjects and have a flair for writing, editing, designing, drawing, video-taking; here's your chance to shine. Simply apply below and post your work. This is going to be a work of quality, anything submitted will be edited and reviewed before making it to the final product. So be sure to submit your best.

Are you ready? Here is the topic list for the first Chapter. Topics where pictures will be included will include a (P) indicator. Feel free to post your articles and photographs to this thread regarding the topics below:

This sounds like a way for Xean to take credit in organizing what is essentially other peoples' hard work. Sorry, Xean, not going to put hours writing a guide for your vanity project.

    This. Write your own guide.

Sign me up for this selfless community initiative.

My first suggested addition is with regard to building up fleet holdings. As everyone knows, this is a long, and often frustrating grind. The work involved has only increased with the recent introduction of the Research Lab Holding.

To this end, I would strongly suggest that people sign up to one of the public service channels like nop public service, in order to get free invites to Tier 5 base facilities, and access to Tier 5 Fleet Ships. This can be of tremendous help to smaller fleets, who only need to reach Tier 1 and ensure they have adequate provisions to gain access to most of the benefits of the fleet system.

Similarly, as many Fleet Leaders will know, the long grind to a Tier 5 Starbase is very expensive. It also requires a lot of refined dilithium, which is often a major bottleneck which hampers fleet holding progression.

To that end, I would note that in the spirit of cooperation, friendship and sharing that Gene Roddenbury espoused, some larger and more established fleets have been holding giveaways as part of the summer celeberations, including giving away several million in refined dilithium to help get fledgling fleets kickstarted. People are advised to follow the example of fleets such as Xtern1ty and to take part in such contests when they are held.

Probably because he seems to think that's what the forums, and game for that matter, are.

Also right. If there's one thing he loves, it's taking advantage of the effort of others and pretending he actually had some sort of useful input on it.

So is there an actual physical DVD?

That sounds like it involves more effort than getting others to do info for him then parrot it.

Wouldn't it be more efficient to encourage people to have a look at the wiki? Most of the work is done already.

yes. the STOwiki is easier, though some of the content is out of date. Luckily anyone can edit it, though.
    Still alive.
