I had a thought to myself the other day. STO has literally been all about the Iconians, they were behind Hobus, which pretty much led to the Fed/Klingon war, the fracturing of the Romulan Empire, and everything pretty much moving forward.
So what's next? Once we defeat the Iconians, are we gonna be looking at a period of peace between the Alliance? If so, does that mean that we'll finally be getting the exploration side of the game that many of us have been craving? Or does it mean that Cryptic is gonna have to come up with a new villain every season for us to fight?
Considering that the Exploration side of the game would require a pretty major revamp in that regards I'm thinking the latter.
Thoughts on who it could be? Or is it just gonna go back to the Fed/Klinks/Roms squabbling again?
S11: The secret of the Wisest Tribble. (No iconian involved!)
EDIT: Serious answer: Cardassian Revamp
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...
If I had to guess, I'd say something Temporal. It all depends on how they wrap up the Iconian plot, but they're essentially the babylon 5's Shadow and Vorlon to the Star Trek Universe. You can't really go bigger than them, so we'll need to ideally go sideways.
Exploration is a good shout, but we're still going to need enemies to fight. I would like to think they'll do something entirely different (instead of the new season, new grind, new gear etc - that stuff becomes tedious).
Would be nice if we could focus back on the Breen and Tholian though; there's enough room on the map to create another six sectors bottom of the Alpha Quadrant to the Tholian Assembly. Maybe bring the Tzenkethi and/or Son'a into the fold? Make it more about border skirmishes (which would be better worked in an exploration-themed expansion) rather than one main enemy perhaps?
We need Cardassians too; not as a faction, but as playable species alongside a species retrait token. A playable Cardassian, with Cardassian Bridge Officers would definitely boost demand for a Cardassian Galor, further boosting Cryptic to rework the Cardassian Lock Box.
I'm hoping they hit up another Legacy of Romulus style season for 11. Maybe KDF and Romulans will finally get T6 science ships like the Federation has had since DR.
I think Season 11 will have new a new Fleetbase system, adding T6, and possibly T7, levels to the process as new Dilithium sinks. I also think we are going to see some new Crafting options to add even more sinks.
I also expect to see a new Expansion Pack after the New Year. This will probably take us into the Gamma Quadrant. I think it is going to have a new Exploration System and a micro-Faction addition - smaller then LoR's micro-Faction addition.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

I actually think some of that will hit with 10.5.
Can't know for certain, but Geko was strongly hinting that the fleet system was getting some attention, and that it might even tie into the war storyline... which will apparently be over by Season 11, according to him.
Don't know if crafting would also hit in 10.5... kits and melee weapons would be nice additions, let alone the modifier changer.

More variety of weapon types would be nice too for ground and space. I'd love it if they added a way you could change mods on existing gear instead of RNG all the time.

I hope this never happens. Getting to T5 is already an ordeal for a lot of fleets. Getting to T6 would be a nightmare. Adding more T3 Fleet Holdings would be far less painful.
10.5 will likely deal with helping the Krenim; in a near-copy/paste of Kobali. With the final showdown with the Iconians happening at the end.
It will also come with:
- At least 1 more Specialization, if not 2. Either a Science-oriented one or a more aggressive tanking one (designed for offense-oriented cruisers; get in, get aggro, take hits and return it harder, call it Vanguard or something).
- The associated Specialist ships and T6 versions of existing ships.
- Another Reputation; probably Krenim, or at least, Temporal-based. (Give us our rainbow Chroniton weapons already Cryptic!)
- It has teasers to S11.
S11 will likely be Cardassian Revamp as well as a new Dominion Arc, if we're still going to be chasing Sela, and if the Devs weren't just blowing hot air over wanting to do a large expansion on the Cardassians in general.
That will come with:
- Another Specialization or two. Possibly a new Ground Specialization (maybe a melee-specialist ground or a "spawn an invasion force" (Call Security Team on steroids) with an Engineer-Fabricator bent (deploy Large Turrets and call in airstrikes)).
- The ships to go with those Specializations.
- Another Reputation
- Potentially another Fraction; start off as a Cardie or other Gamma Quad race then pick a side to ally with.
- Slim but full Cardassian Fraction ship tree, probably including some originals to pad out the Tiers (about as much as they did with the Romulan ship tree).
- If no Cardassian Fraction, then a C-Store unlock to play a Fed or KDF Cardie.
- Back to basics story and plot; no galaxy-ending eldritch horrors, just some uppity enemy faction that thinks they could take down the Alliance.
What other things we might get to see scattered between the two:
- Possibility of Alliance factions using other Faction ships (probably restricted to T5s and select T6s). Requires completion of Surface Tension.
- Maybe some exploration (of the Andromeda galaxy, if not of the Milky Way galaxy).
- Faction-agnostic missions with Faction-specific optionals (an extension to the old Class-specific optionals) to give some variety to missions.
- A token new PvP map or three for space.
- Possible Borg Cooperative Fraction (was mentioned in one of the recent Podcasts).
What we're NOT likely to see:
- A return to faction-specific missions.
- Arbitrary breaking up of the Alliance (not until Season 12, but we know it will end with a reformation of the Alliance with Season 13).
- Borg Lockbox/Lobi/Promotional Ships
- a PvP(vE) Coliseum with it's own series of arenas with different rulesets (Normal, Half-Vanilla, Vanilla, In-Faction, Faction vs Faction, Free-for-All, Capture the Starbases, Massed Assault (includes NPCs fighting alongside teams vs other teams), Masters of the Galaxy (restricted to top-ranked players)).
Season 11 will have a revamp of something that doesn't need a revamp.
Right. You may not think something needs to have some updates to it, but the devs know more about what needs updating than you, so I think I'll take the devs' concepts over someone who thinks that the game doesn't need updates to systems/story missions.
I hope this never happens. Getting to T5 is already an ordeal for a lot of fleets. Getting to T6 would be a nightmare. Adding more T3 Fleet Holdings would be far less painful.
or maybe add another two tiers to the existing holdings:
-the dil mine has an entire second level that is used for nothing
-the spire has an entire second room that is used for nothing
-the embassy has about 25 dead consoles that are used for nothing

If half of this is true, then it wont be long before I call it quits with the game. I'm hardly playing now because it's become stale. Another rep system, another universal set of missions and even more specific-specializations and further grind just aren't going to cut it this time. The fun needs to be injected back into the game.
This wouldn't have been half a bad idea if ST:VOY (and later, Cryptic) hadn't reduced the Borg to cannon-fodder. Short of the Borg acquiring Iconian tech, they just don't present a genuine threat to anyone anymore, and Iconian teched-up Cubes should be almost unstoppable. I don't want to see that.
There's already enough pew in the game. What we need is more internal development; a fresh touch on existing content, revamps across the board, character upgrades, better flexibility with ships, exploration, a spring clean (so to speak).
I'd like to see Season 10 end with mass destruction and we just barely beat the Iconians. Season 11 would be about rebuilding and reunification.
Perhaps there are some corrupt people within the Fed/KDF/RR that prolonged the Iconian war for their own benefit. We have to prove their guilt and then deal with them.
Perhaps there is now a civil war on a planet we need to quell.
Perhaps pirates are raiding the supply lines we use for rebuilding these worn-torn planets.
This looking-inward approach can reunite the KDF and the Federation into an alliance so they can share all missions going forward.

I assume you mean share as in cross faction teaming.
I expect the real Kahless to show up at some point. Seems like the kind of guy the Iconinans would keep on ice to make sure the Klingons were not really unified.
I also expect him to not get along with the Federation, and to put us back where we were before we all started being kissy kissy on account of the war.
It's going to be difficult to not have the Iconians as the over arching villain of the game, but perhaps we will get some push from the Dominion, or Mirror universe people to take up the slack.
The Fed and the KDF fought each other from levels 1 through 20 (it's been years since I played the early levels so I honestly don't remember what level it is). Everything after that is "we're still at war with you, but that can wait until we kill all of these other guys." Once the Iconians are done, isn't it time for reunification?
Perhaps we could even have to gain reputation with the other faction (KDF, Fed, RR) and then be able to use their ships? For example, I have a Science Orion in the KDF but there are no suitable Science ships for the KDF. Once I build up a bunch of reputation with the Fed I'd unlock the ability to command a Vesta.
I've been SO tired of absolutely everything in STO so far being because of the Iconians. I don't believe for a second that's what was intended, but it's so tiresome!
Why can't we have separate and independent bad guys, instead of one all powerful?

Why can't we have separate and independent bad guys, instead of one all powerful?
But we have PLENTY of separate and independent baddies all over the place!
Let's start with the Gamma Quadrant, where almost every alien race encountered is hostile, like the Vaadwaur, Species 8472, the Kazon Alliance and the like (side bar: what do you all think of all the Kazon factions banding together to take on the Delta Alliance?).
I think that if the Preservers can act as the overarching "good" guys, why not have the Iconians as the overarching baddies? Makes sense.
More baddies and potential baddies: the Gorn Hegemony; the Tzenkethi Coalition; the Breen Confederacy; the Holy Order of the Kinshaya. Imagine what this game would be like if just two of these joined in an alliance. Now, in the novels cannon currently (well actually, this series began back in 2012) the Typhon Pact is a very big deal, with plenty of quality ST stories as a result.
I hope that for Season 11 we focus on winning the war and rebuilding, and, yes, exploration in its purest sense! And then, maybe for 11.5, we begin to see groups that we already know and love, like the Tholians, Breen, Gorn, maybe even the Borg, band together to accomplish what they couldn't separately. And with the "threat" of the Mirror Universe and the Undine right on our doorstep, there should be no shortage of quality story content and (hopefully) some fantastic feature episodes! Call me a dreamer...:D
alpha rising: the end of the klingon empire. this could be interesting if the empire was divided. 1 faction who wants to stay allied with the federation and the romulan republic, and an other faction who wants to bring back the old klingon mentality and expand the klingon conquest in more quadrants.
People are going to want exploration and I don't blame them. They could add it and still tie it into the game's current plot. We've spent a great deal of time in the Delta Quadrant for example but we only got two sector blocks. Let's expand on that and explore the regions that Voyager didn't get to explore. Canon species were named that Voyager never got the chance to encounter after they got home earlier than they should have. So now Cryptic can use artistic licence to flesh out a species that currently only exists as a name in the canon.
Of course we actually know more about the Delta Quadrant than we do the Gamma. I always thought this was weird because they've had a stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant for decades and yet we know more about the Delta Quadrant from Voyagers 7 year journey. It's time to flesh out the Gamma side of the Galaxy and the best way to do that would be to add the Hur'q. It's already theorized that the Hur'q are responsible for the Fek'Ihri, so everything can come full circle by going back to the first few missions of the Klingon arc. This time however, the war with the Federation has ended and so the Klingons don't have to face them alone.
