The costumes are 5.50$ (550 zen) however the only payment options are 5.00$ (500 zen) 10.00$ (1000 zen), 20.00$ (2000) zen) 30.00$ (3000 zen) and so on.
Why can't I just buy 5.50$ worth of Zen? Why I am I just stuck with the 5$ payment, and I am lacking the 50 cents I need to purchase a costume?
Is there an area where you can buy a specific amount of zen? If not that kind of sucks.
Veteran of STO, had it for 5 years. Unfortunately, my Original account is gone.

That's normal for most MMO's with micro-transactions.
It's just easier in the end when doing transaction costs and a few other business considerations.

Its on purpose so they make more money. Its called business. Sell you nearly everything you need, but not the last little drop, so you have to buy twice as much.
Means that to get a costume, you either buy $10 of Zen for it, or you buy $5, and dil-grind the last 50 needed.
Especially in light of the "bound to company" nature of many E-currencies, that "leftover balance" is what I've always considered a "driver of future sales"...
IE, you spend your $10, get your $5.50 costume. That $4.50 is waiting there for you, "teasing" you into buying another item, etc.
Think for a second. With that $4.50 left over, you can buy a second, third, heck, 10th costume for $5 a shot with the leftovers.
Or begin a long and industrious career of "investing" in the Lockbox keys.
Or nab some extra inventory, BOffs, ships, heck, I think you can even nab a couple spare character slots to use that costume you bought for $5.50...
If the only thing you want off the C-store is a costume, then yeah, it's very inconveniently priced. If you look at it as a chance to make an investment to start "really" setting your character up...?
And don't forget the Dil to Zen method of covering the difference, something that didn't exist when the costumes were set at $5.50 if I remember correctly, only been here since F2P and costumes have always been that price...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Yeah, I wish I can simply go to my bank's ATM to withdraw $1.23.
That is also the reason why some real world companies/stores don't allow card payments under $5 or so. With every transaction, they have to pay a certain amount to the payment system company.
Yes, it is business. As soon as you pay the bills in your own company, you won't find it stuuuupiiidd anymore.
Since when can you buy $5 of zen? The lowest denomination has always been $10, yep just checked now while writing this, can't buy $5. That has been my complaint, I want a something for 500 zen and have to give them $10 and get "change back".
Being a business owner myself, the real reason you price something this way is to force the customer to have to buy more then they need. You get more money from them and so what if they have some left over? You just made twice as much as you should have off them. Same reason There are more hotdogs in a pack then there are in a bag of buns. The hotdog and bread companies have a deal with each other to exploit the consumer. If you disagree, you're wrong.
"Being a troll myself, I classify this malcontent as a Type-2 Oblivious Troll. My reasons for coming to this conclusion are: The annoying colored text he deploys, the contradictory threads he creates, the excessive whining and foot stamping, the amusement factor of his threads, and the apparent lack of realization that he is in fact a troll, like me, and is not the heart broken, victimized, player, he sees himself as."

um.. its a trick? A typical chinese method to make you buy more zen then needed.
um.. its a trick? A typical chinese method to make you buy more zen then needed.
I thought that much was obvious.. lol
It's not a "Chinese Method." They started doing it in medieval times, probably before recorded history. Making someone work or pay more then they need to to get what they want. For example: You goto the hardware store because you need 4 bolts to replace old or rusted ones. They sell bolts in bags of 4 but the nuts you need to go with them are sold in bags of 3. It's one of the things that drives me crazy about this method. Same with the hotdog and buns I mentioned earlier. It only seems to be an asian method because a lot of the mmo's are owned by asian corporations and when we feel cheated or used, they're always the reason why. It's a narrow view but justified.

you just buy the rest using dil exchange. or fall for the scam sarge explained and buy more than you need.
Now clowns, that's another story. They scare the crap out of me.
We fight them too. Entire armies spilling out of Volkswagens.
We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending them in.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

But you don't pay $10. You spend $10, but you'll still have 450 Zen left.
Or you could buy the 500 Zen and convert Dil to Zen for the other 50.
Or you could convert Dil to Zen for the entire 550.
Or you could convert that 450 Zen you had left to Dil if you needed that more.
Or...etc, etc, etc.
