failed to create DirectX render device. game crashes on startup

title pretty much says it all with my issue. tried starting the game as normal and the game crashed on startup giving me the message in the title here of, failed to create DirectX render device. I tried to do an update on the DirectX directly from the Microsoft site which had no effect. I tried verifying the game to no effect. I also looked for driver updates to my video card and so on, to which windows says they're updated. It didn't start doing this until today. Does anyone else have any ideas as to what could possibly be going on?

I have been having the same problem for over a week and they told me to reinstall the game and launcher which did nothing. I also have all my drivers and direct x updated. I believe this is their problem that they are failing to address. This is happening to other friends and no one can get logged in because of crash on load.

My ticket still hasn't been responded too. This needs to be addressed by ARC.

For a temporary fix you can go to the STO EXE file and change preferences to run in compatability mode XP (or anything that will force STO to run with Directx 9 instead of 11. You will be able to run STO until ARC finally fixes the game.

There seem to be issue with DX11 at the moment, and can be your issue.

Never the less, it can also be a corrupted DX. You can try and repair it. To do that, I suggest you go through their web-instructions, as other areas working, might break.

If you have a newer machine make sure as well, that your DX are up-to-date. DX9 does not auto update, on my machine at least, and I will need to manually update it. (Only happens when the client doesn't come with the correct DX installer OFC, what this client doesn't.)

If you haven't set your client to run with administrating priveliges, you can run into trouble there as well. In order to be sure, set all .exe files in your PWE(ARC) folder to run as Admin.

But do as xyz111 says. Force the client to run in another mode, using compatability options.

I have a solution to this problem for nVidia users! I just came across this after having 3 days of down time in STO. This has to do with the Cuda Cores on the Geforce Control Panel. Disabling these cuda cores fixed the problem for me. I had three different erroes. D3D11 Device Removed. D3D11 Creating Vertex Buffer. And D3D11 Error creating 1x1x1 mips .

nVidia Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > CUDA GPU's set to NONE

I'm not sure why this would cause a problem, but it did fix it for me. I just hope that this fixes it for more people. SPREAD THE WORD IF IT WORKS FOR YOU!!!! I have seen many posts about this problem. Get the fix around.

By the way, I AM NOT A DEV. Just someone who wants to see this game function correctly from now on

I'm glad to see this fix working for some people! We need to get it around as much as possible!!! I;m so glad my 3 days out of 5 vacation didn't go to total waste. I know this fix hasn't worked for some people, so I am currently working on other solutions as well.

The problem is not a driver issue. I have already been down and proven that theory false. This is in fact an STO error. I have tried ruling out everything. It has to deal with STO being compatibility with CUDA.

    Proof this works!!! - - - http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?p=23447121&posted=1#post23447121
