What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

STO game client seemingly has a bit of a memory leak issue!

This only rises up, when I have been playing for some 4+hrs. of continuous play time, added with several character changes included.

This occurs each and, every day with re-verifying all of the files not ever correcting the issue.

How does it seem like a memory leak?

Well, it seems to only occur when the game has used up tons of memory, to the point it crashes the client, than immediately after it crashes to my desktop, the rest of my system memory slows down everything for only a few secs., than everything picks back up to speed as all of that memory allocation the client hogged up, can now be used for everything else.

Same thing applies after hours of playing, than trying to use another slightly demanding program on top of the client, it will cause the other program to work slow and, only after hours of game time is clocked, otherwise if it is a fresh game load than it doesn't stall other programs nor, crash itself.

The reproduction for myself, is exactly the same everyday so, nothing ever changes and, re-verifying the files never finds an issue nor, resolves the issue.

Not a big deal, as all I need to do is restart the client when this happens but, just putting it out there for the Dev's as a sort of FYI to look into.

Memory leak means the game will use ever increasing amounts of memory. Is your client doing that? Task manager will tell you how much memory it's using. I've played for 8 hours straight before switching between half a dozen characters multiple times, never seen any sort of leak. In fact it holds pretty stable.

I'm with xaviermace on this one. A memory leak would in its simplest cause the client to crash at least. BSoD would also be common.
I've had a stable load count and you could consider that the bacground programs you're running are the factual cause of this.

It's kind of been like this forever. Will usually be a case of doing certain things, then restarting the client to do other things. Run a bunch of alts through some stuff, then restart the client to do anything with a main. It is one of those things where it did just kind of turn into accepting it and just going through the motions.

The client starts at roughly 500k-700k of memory hogging at first but, after continuous use, it gets as high as 900k-1.2gb when it finally crashes, which supports my thread on memory leaking.

BSOD has occurred in the past and, does still occur for many others. Also, the client crashes every single day this occurs and, by definition of a memory leak, it causes other system wide memory slow downs till, the client has fully relinquished its grip on memory so, that other sources can make adequate use of it.

And, this is with or, without any other resources being used, except what is needed to run the OS + game client and, any drivers related to hardware.

Remember all, this is running myself on a 32bit OS so, memory is utterly crucial and, it takes hours upon hours for it to trickle it's way so high, not to mention it only occurs when several character changes are done and, not just by playing a single character for that same time period!

For those with boat loads of memory on their personal rigs, it might not ever occur or, may take eons if it were to occur for them.

Also, I noticed with each and every character change, it caused a 1% increase to physical memory, while seemingly staying stable using the character for long periods of time, until the next character change which again caused an increase of 1%.

Sitting in sector space, doing nothing but watching chat for 30 min, memory usage climbs from 500k to 1,032,844k with all other processes 77,780 and below.

Started seeing this behavior with the patch to fix the initial UI problems of Delta Breaking.

Reported multiple times to the devs With no response.

In the time its taken to write this, usage is up to 1,142,424 and slowly climbing higher just sitting watching the stars...

Well, normally it isn't unusual for a game to run in the 1Gb range but, staying stable until each and, every character change causing further increases, is seemingly a problem IMO.
