I don't want to be rude or anything but is cryptic thinking of give players more choice for getting stuff ? Because lately I feel the whole game exits on crafting only.
It has become a craft and grind game there isn't anything you can buy anymore....
Or you have to gamble so much to try to get something special or you have to grind your way true things and lately you have to craft almost everything or you have to save up ridiculous much game credits to buy something from the exchange.
Cmon devs brainstorm on something to get some good stuff without all the crafting and grinding... it cost so much time the fun is a bit off these days.
Not all of us can spend hours on hours behind a PC gaming we have families and children and the few free hours we do have we want to have fun win something without putting a whole salary on the table for it and really if you make something nice like you did more than once I like to pay for it in witch I did more than once but I also like to earn stuff for all the work I do in game and that's the problem because lately you introduce sets like this win a deflector, shields and engine but you get the warp core if you buy the ship. But I do not want that ship I only wanted the warp core. you know something like that....
So please find a way for those who don't want to grind for days after days and get not what they want it. I was already disappointed when I had to start all over again from master grinder to zero and start from scratch.
I'm on lvl 4 now and I hate it already it just goes to slow to much time consuming even with power ups and all that it just take too much time to reach the level you really want....
Also heard people talk that they reached top level and then had to start a search for stuff to find to research the stuff they wanted so badly....
We don't want to grind or craft so much couldn't you keep it simpler for us home dad's who doesn't have all the time in the world to do this...
I ask you DEVS please find a way.....

I don't know... I dont mind the crafting element as long as the crafting reward is better than bought or dropped loot! Usually it is.
I am playing another game now called Archeage.. and it relies HEAVILY on crafting. From houses to farms to modes of transportation and everything in between. In fact, drops (armor, etc.) are rare and 9 x out of 10 anything that can be dropped is under par to the items that can be crafted by players.
The crafting mechanics are intense from gathering materials to actually crafting the items. Theres no cooldown, per se; as soon as you have completed crafting the item it is useable, but it can take some time to hunt down the mats you need.
As for STO, Id like to see the lvl 15 R&D gear outperform most other in game gear (short of perhaps zen or lobi bought). The Aegis set, the Sniper rifle, etc. As long as this is the case then I am happy.
We craft, you buy. Sounds like a perfect setup to me.
STO is actually pretty MMO friendly; in that you don't have to run queues every day until your eyes or fingers bleed just to hope for that one perfect drop (and to not have to roll, ask, or beg others to let you take it).
You just pay the time-gate game for the EC, Dilithium, Reputation, and R&D.
Most mission rewards are TRIBBLE because they want you to craft (they also screwed over one of the Tetryon rewards in a more recent update) or grind their Reputation system. Most of the good stuff are locked behind reputation or crafting (usually just reputation-related sub-faction groups in other MMOs).

Yeah, Diablo 2 was like that. It took weeks to find what you needed for crafting sometimes.... then you made the item... and sometimes regretted it, since some recipes had random results.
If you think crafting in STO is at the mercy of the RNG.... in D2, it used an I-level system where the maximum possible quality of mod was a little above your level. this could result in the creation of gear that was utterly useless since it had a combination of high and low level affixes, and was thus weak for any character high enough level to use it. Conversely, if you had a character higher than level 89 do it there was the possibility that you might get something that would NEVER be usable by anyone because it was assigned a character level that didn't exist. the level cap was either 100 or 99, and you could make gear that was HIGHER than that...
But some of the crafted items were actually quite good, and very useful... IF you got RNG rolls that were decent.
Oh how I truely love Diablo II, I still have it and all the expansions on my machine. My assassin was just... I digress off topic, I could talk about that game for hours.
Back on topic though, given the current level of gear available in the game it would be nice to see the odd UR or perhaps even epic gear drop on advanced or elite STF's. Something very rare but something that can be attained with regular play and adds a bit more excitement that something of significant use may one day drop from a successful run.

The more STO grows, the more gamble we have. It started with the box, and now we still have them, and on top of that we have the DOFF pack event, the R&D pack event, the upgrind, the craft... Some of them with randomness on top of randomness. Quality upgrade is random, and then the mod is random.
In the end, I'm not even sure this is a game or merely a random number generator. It's quite funny when we look back, when they introduced the rep because the "endgame" loot was just luck.
Quality upgrade is random, and then the mod is random.
This is what really bothers me about the upgrade system. I don't gamble... and you're forced to now if you want the top gear. There's no way around it.

I didn't gamble on any of mine. All rep gear is full fixed mods, all fleet gear is UR already (and has the fixed epic mods that all items do) and I bought the crafted gear at UR. I'm not dealing with that RNG (except in money making attempts); I'll let others suffer through that.

Yeah not being able to pick mods really stinks. What makes it stink more is that a dev has come out and said (on a Priority One podcast) that it is this way because they couldn't program the game to let us pick mods. Fancy that. Getting this into the game would make crafting so much more bearable. Because who around here actually likes making 250 beam arrays just to get one with [CrtD]x3 or [CrtD]x2 [Pen]...or whatever it is you want.
TL;DR = The RNG is out of control and there is no end in sight.
Thats what I mean it is forced upon you... it's the only thing you can do or buy it from the exchange which is crazy ... for example body armor Mk XIV cost 70.000.000 EC ???
Thats just insane and cryptic could deal with it but they won't because everybody would have topgear in an instance....

Crafting is popular because it's the most efficient means of getting gear currently.
Back in season 5/6, the STF system was the best way of getting decent gear easily.
In season 7 with the earlier version of the Rep system, that was popular for a time.
From season 7 to season 9 roughly, fleet gear was popular as more fleets got to the point that they could simply provision their stores, and get invites to other fleets who'd unlocked stuff already. Still kinda is for some stuff, like tac consoles.
Honestly, between the sheer supply of low mk items that can have practically any mods you wish. Now do the rarer combos of mods cost more? Yes, but, people are acting like this is some kind of NEW thing! I remember when a Mk XII very rare tac console of a popular energy type could run you 20 + million EC for one, and the only way to get them was an annoying process through DOFFing that 99% of the time would net you worthless junk consoles.
Or wanting lots of Acc for your weapons, and the main way of getting them was by random enemy drops.
I admit, I am not a total fan of the pure RNG that seems to plague everything. Nobody is forcing anyone to go to the exchange and HAVE to buy the epic level Mk XIV stuff with all the best mods on it for tens, if not hundreds of millions of EC per item. The upgrade system, expensive as it might be, DOES mean you can just buy a low Mk item with the mods you might want for far cheaper, and level that up instead.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.
Mk XII rep gear will do just fine for all existing content... You aren't going to be the best of the best, but if costs associated with obtaining/upgrading Mk XIV gear is a concern, just don't bother...

Signed. MKIV gear is meant for the high spenders and people who play 10h+. If you are not motivated to pay that price, you don't get the shinys. ANY MMO out there does it.

Cryptic took the third option.
Timegates are a metric's best friend. Just log in, punch in the 20 hour project, repeat for three months to a year, then start playing.

Wanting the best gear right now, without spending one or the other is not going to happen.
Besides, what do you "need" this gear for anyway? Cheap XII gear from the exchange will get you pretty far.
