I found some old articles on weapon's ranges and how the damage drops off with distance, especially with cannons. All of the articles I have seen are about 5 years old though, so I was wondering if these are still true since the game has changed so much. Thanks.
It should still be accurate.
Basic rule I've learned a long time ago, and the graph pretty much say the same : be at 3km or less of the target. At 5km and above, your cannons are TRIBBLE. And you'd better play beams.
OFC, that was a long time ago, when beams were barely average, and DHC were the master of DPS.
Now, no matter the range, you'd better play beams. No seriously, they rules.

Those specific numbers for how much percent you lose look accurate enough to me but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
Beams are more forgiving on range.
Ideally, you still want to be as close as possible for all energy weapons though.
